I'm thinking about leveling a mage further than 20 and i used a frost spec for the most part, all about killing things before they get to you by slowing them down...i've heard u get a pet later too, but i've heard fire is also a very good spec to go plus u have more skills to use at lower levels...rather than frostbolt(pretty much) all the time till 66 when u get ice lance...so my question: Is fire a viable and well survivable spec to use, or should i expect to die if something gets too close to me?

Yes, no matter what spec you choose you will probably die if something get's too close to you. Truthfully if something stays next to you for too long or multiple somethings get next to you.
Frost = Keep things away from you as long as possible.
Fire = Kill things quick before they get to you.
Fire is a good leveling spec and faster than frost for the most part. Frost can be faster on the kill x mobs quests if the mobs are mostly mele. Even then, pre lvl 40 it's not a big difference. However, if you are not confident or have slow reflexes then Fire is probably not for you and Frost is much safer.

See the leveling guide in my signature. I tried both Fire and Frost for leveling, both have been viable for leveling. I suggest going down the frost route as it is simple and eventually more efficient, especially 50+. What ever you do, you should definately switch to a frost spec at 40 and get Ice Barrier. That alone will make facing multiple enemies easy to deal with.
