This popped into my head while I was leveling fishing. Wouldn't be cool if while creating your toon you were asked if you wanted to be Horde or Alliance? Let me explain you would do away with the division of races between Horde and Alliance and make it a personal choice. This was something I have been thinking about since the Cata announcement because I want to level a worgen but I am true blue Horde.

So basically you want all races to have an option to be in the faction of your own personal choice.
No, I'm sorry, this discussion has been beaten to death, and it just wouldn't work out.

It's been beaten to death? I've actually never seen it brought up before.
And I don't see why it wouldn't work. I would see it very similarily to the way Death Knights are handled. There is a world full of bad Death Knights, and then there are the "player" Death Knights who break away from the Lich King and do their own thing.
I mean, it would mean a complete re-tooling of how the game is approached, but that doesn't mean the discussion should be dismissed out of hand. It would be kind of interesting (academically speaking) if you started in your first area, did your opening questlines, and then at level 10 there was a branching where you could choose your faction, irrespective of your race.
I kind of thought about this when I saw the Goblin starting-area videos.
Goblins are a Horde race because the Goblin leader, after the Cataclysm, is saved by Thrall (or something like that).
So, instead of automatically getting saved, it could be interesting to have it part of a questline (choose your own adventure-style if you will) of who saves you and thus which faction you join.
Cons, of course, is totally bucking an "ain't broke, don't fix it" system we have now. The way factions work now is fine. There's really no legitimate reason to allow a Draenei Paladin to be in the Horde faction, just because "BUT I WANT TO!"
So, while it's interesting to think about, I don't think I'd necessarily support the idea. Not that it wouldn't work, just that it's unnecessary and kinda goes against, for lack of better words, longstanding tradition.

I can see your point but at the same time it's a terrible idea. If you let people choose then there will be gnomes and bluespacegoatz in Undercity.. UNDERCITY! No can do. You already can choose at the character creation page. Want to switch? It's called re-rolling. ;)

Maybe to play around with OP idea..perhaps if our toons weren't in a guild we would be neutral..recruited by a horde guild then we are horde..alliance then we are alliance. In a sense of the word "mercenaries". Each side having its advantage and disadvantages.
Yes I know it's never going to happen..but the thread is "random thoughts" ..oh never mind back to skinning hordes :)

Could you imagine how confusing that would be to PvPers in the BGs? Especially those with names unchecked for display.
But yeah, this topic has been brought up quite a few times on the WoW Forums (I believe a few times here as well...)
Also, I could be wrong, but that would be kinda complex to code IMO. It would probably require a whole reworking of the current faction system, and I don't see the WoW Dev Team "fixing something that ain't broke".

If this happens.
Female Dwarves will eat us.
...
Yes. There are such things as female dwarves. A rare sight, but they are NOT a myth!
