Helping my roomate get better

hey everyone,
my roomates and I have been playing WoW together since BC. i played before coming to college, but not really as seriously or as frequently.
being able to play with my friends in the same room as me has made me appreciate and like the game more than ever before.
i have two roomates and both of them play for at least 2-3 hours on the typical day. because of my work schedule / class / other obligations (gf) i can usually only spend a small fraction of that amount of time playing. sometimes i can pull off an hour a day, sometimes 30 minutes, but for over half the week, i can't play much at all.
because when i get on to play i don't know how long i'll be able to play for, and because i rarely can play for more than an hour or two at a time, i never have really entertained the idea of doing serious raiding. aside from the occasional heroic (for fun) with my roomates, i usually don't do any pve at all.
i spend most of the time that i have available doing bgs or arena. i find playing against other, real life people way more interesting / fun than putting a raid together / waiting for something to happen / etc...
unfortunately, my roomates have basically the opposite mentality. they love raiding, and even have met some of our guildmates irl because they all get along so well.
they want me to start raiding, so we can play together more, but i just don't have the time. i'd rather they get into pvp.
this season was the first season i started doing arena with one of my roomates.
we've done less than 100 games in total, but we've managed to get to 1700 with druid/lock
i'm not the best at arena, and neither is my roomate, but we both try to help each other and learn from one another's weaknesses.
the problem is, i really want to do 3s with my other roomate, it's just that up unto this point he is completely INEPT when it comes to pvp. he has stepped foot in arena less than 30 times total probably, and he has only done the very occasional bg.
he has both a warrior and mage, so either one would be perfect to do 3s with us, however, he feels really discouraged after doing any pvp because he just gets DESTROYED by other players in ANY SETTING he tries (duels, bgs, arena).
his gear is actually pretty good, and i've tried talking strats with him, telling him what to do, playing for him so he can watch, etc... but it doesn't seem to help.
he's decent at pve, and i know that he is good at video games because he's kicked my ass in lots of console games. he's smart, and he understands the concepts in pvp, he just can't seem to execute anything.
i've helped him do his keybindings, i've helped him choose a ui and different mods, etc... he just doesn't seem to improve.
also, because he does so poorly in arena when he tries (1-9 as mage/rogue) he just doesn't want to pvp anymore.
i would love to do 3s with him, i just don't know how to encourage him anymore, or help him get better. I don't want to have to find a random for 3s :(!
i was thinking, are there any ways to get better in wow, without actually playing wow?
because arena involves so much more than just using 1-4 skills at a certain interval, would it be possible that other games such as RTS (starcraft) help him develop
- situational awareness
- micro management
- less frantic / mindless button mashing
- confidence
and if it would, would those skills possibly transfer over to WoW?
a lot of the problems he has in WoW (not standing in fire lol, moving to the right spot in pve, being aware of other peoples abilities in pvp) i never really experienced, even as a novice.
but, i had lots of experience playing games like starcraft before switching over to WoW, so i was used to trying to be aware of everything going on around me.
sorry for the wall of text
just looking for some help!

There's not better way to learn PvP than doing pvp.
Yes, micro-intensive games like Starcraft can develop situation awareness and coordination and Fighting games like SSMB can develop reflexes but you said he's already at video games so the best way to learn is to pratice, pratice, pratice in arenas/duels.
If he got a good comp, record his duels/matches and comment them, point him his mistakes and his good moves.
I played with my feral druid in arenas since season 4 and only now, I feel than I am confortable and "skilled". Hopefully, It won't take as long for your partner but it will certainly take more than 10 games.

Ok first off..
@RICKROFLD that is not what were about here and have fun with what is about to come your way.
@Give.
What does you roommate enjoy playing the most for the 2 toons. After that get him to go to the class board and read about pvp arena. Alot of times there are tips that will help you better play your toon. Good examples of combos, how to gear for the content, and how to better aid yourself against some of the more troublesome classes. Every Toon has atleast 1 Toon Class that will give them trouble.

thanks for the tips guys
i've tried dueling him a LOT on many different characters. after each duel i tell him what he could have done differently, just the problem is if i tell him "always use X after i use ability Y," it doesn't really help him overall in pvp. i want to teach him how to adapt to things, learn to use his cooldowns effectively, when to use certain things, remembering he has various abilities, etc...
i'm going to try doing arena with him for practice, it's just in arena he generally gets destroyed within the first 10 seconds because he has no awareness for his own health, when to iceblock, when to los, etc... and it's really frustrating trying to tell him because he can't really execute anything under pressure.
i'll let you guys know how it goes though :)!
edit: since i don't have a healing class, would it be better to practice 2s or 3s with him? double dps has a tough learning curve imo for 2s
