First part here.
-Fünden and Khaz ran with the rest of the soldiers toward the main tunnel into the Wetlands, which was clogged with Dragonmaw orcs. In front of them the stalwart dwarves had formed a solid wall of shields and thick armor. The orcs hacked and slashed, using brunt force to crush the dwarven defenses.
-Fünden saw one orc lift a dwarf high in the air and throw him to the side. The dwarf tumbled into the Loch. He popped up once and started to say something, before sinking back down inside the Loch.
-Fünden lifted his rifle and fired. An orc who had a dwarf soldier defenseless clutched his chest and tumbled backward into the Loch. Khaz fired as well, striking down another soldier, but they were outnumbered. Already the dwarven legion was dwindling, and the orcs were advancing.
-Fünden lifted his axe, ready to plunge into the fray, when he heard a horn cry. I know this horn signal! He thought. He was correct. The entire dwarven legion turned and fled, running toward the tower. The orcs howled and ran forward, weapons raised in the air. Then the legion turned and fired. Bullets whizzed forward, striking many an orc fell.
-The orcs threw up their heavy shields, blocking most of the attacks and firing back with their bows. Three of the remaining twenty dwarves fell to the ground with arrows sticking from their chests and necks. The rest fled back into the tower. The orcs howled again as one, and ran toward the tower. This time, the guns on the second level fired. Bullets whizzed, faster than a normal rifle, striking down orcs.
-The orcs weren’t stupid. They could have fallen back under a hail of gunfire and hoped they could make it back to the tunnel alive. Or they could take the much shorter distance to the tower, placing them inside the minimum range of the rifles. Which is what they did. Fifty orcs ran to the walls of the tower, and started skirting the edge toward the doors.
-“They’re coming,” Fünden whispered. He raised his rifle, as did the remaining seventeen dwarves. The first orcs peered through the doors. And got bullets in their faces. Five fell dead, and two critically injured. The others fell back.
-Fünden pulled his axe from his back. He was out of ammo, as were most of the remaining dwarves. They had taken down twenty of the enemy orcs, but they were still outnumbered two to one, especially now that five more dwarves had fallen.
-The orcs had used dead bodies, mainly of dwarves, as shields, using them to soak up the gunfire while advancing. Luckily, because the machine guns had been set at the bottom of the stairs, the orcs had never been able to pass the doors, but bow fire had taken its toll. Now they were all out, except for one machine gun, and possibly doomed.
-Fünden never had a chance to think more on the afterlife as the orcs drove into the room. He lifted his axe, and an orc did the same. It raised the axe high, intending to smash Fünden’s helmet. “Too easy,” he muttered, slicing his axe along its belly, spilling out its guts. The orc held its hands to its belly, and crumpled to the side, where Fünden’s axe to its neck finished it off.
-Another orc rushed at him. This one proved much more skilled. It slashed its axe in a brute swing to Fünden’s right side. It then twisted its blade downward, hoping to chop Fünden’s feet out from under him. He leapt backward, avoiding the blow. He slashed out with one of his own, but it was blocked on the orc’s axe handle, which was made of stone.
- Fünden twisted his axe, which was made of Mithril, therefore stronger and lighter than the orc’s axe. While it was still recovering, Fünden’s blade chopped into its torso. It grunted and twisted, jerking the axe out of Fünden’s hands. It swung its own axe, once, twice, three times at Fünden, who barely managed to dodge each time.
-Finally, he prepared for the final blow, only to hear a gunshot. The orc tumbled dead, and Fünden grabbed his axe, to see Khaz standing there. He grinned, holding up a small device. Fünden looked at it in confusion, and shrugged. Khaz’s smile widened, and he hurled the device into the orcs.
-There was a powerful explosion, and every orc, and most dwarves, were thrown on their backs. The machine gunner grinned and opened fire. Blood peppered the walls, and soon only dwarves were moving again. Fünden got to his feet and picked up his axe. “All hail Khaz! Champion of Northgate Pass!” he yelled. Khaz reddened to his beard, but smiled.
((Just so you know, while this is a big happy ending there WILL be more on the way.))
