Got my buddy back into wow after 5 months....he is confused on seals etc

He is dual spec prot/ret and forgot everything...I sent him here and he read the guides but he still has one question(S)
in ret and protection
for ret he found this guide Ret PvE Guide - Leveling to Raiding
but it still didn't seem to be a what to do as preparation before an attack
he said it helped on ret seals etc but for prot he said he is stumped
what seals/auras etc does he cast on himself before starting his attacks and rotation.
any help is greatly appreciated.
(I am talking to him on the phone as I type this and he has me so confused I am saying....ok a paladin...whats that LOL)
