so my new paladin just hit 80 yesterday, and i've been really curious about how to gear him up for ret. soooo, basically, just like the title says... is getting the 4 piece bonus of the 232 lvl t9 better to get than picking up two pieces of 245 lvl and just 3 of the t9s?
i realize this question might have been answered, but the only things i found in the forum search were months old.

matters what is in the other slots. 2p 245 is better (more item levels, so harder to replace.

maybe i'm missing something in your brief post, but that's not a very clear answer. I understand that itemwise 245s are better than 232s, but what i'm asking is does the 4pc bonus from t9 outweigh the better stats given from the two 245s?

For Ret pally's most people go for 2 tier 9 then go for the badge shoulders and helm. The legs being the main one for the teir 9 that u want do to the Exp that they have.

Depends on the rest of your gear.
pretty crappy since i'm a brand new 80. had a few heroics drops and now i've got 2pc t9, but that's why i created the thread in the first place.. gearing myself up from ground zero, on a different server so i can't feed myself gold from another main..
Really, I think it's more a matter of whether 4pc bonus and one ilvl 245 is better than just 2pc and two ilvl 245s
Yep, that's exactly what I asked in my opening post...
My experience with RAWR indicates that the 4pc bonus and one ilvl 245 is better. This changes though as soon as you get 2pc T10.
I think looking a little longer term, it would be a better investment to get the ilvl 245 stuff, or better, get the ilvl 245 helmet and skip the shoulders for the T10 shoulders. You can get enough frost emblems relatively quickly enough while gearing up your other slots with emblem gear, and it's worth doing because 2pc T10 will make a big difference in DPS.Last edited by armill3 5 hr 56 min ago
Yeah, rush T10 shoulders and pray for a VoA drop for your 2P. Make sure you can maintain your 2P T9 and 2P T10 at the same time, they work well together. Don't break 2P T9 until 4P T10.
Regardless of which slots you put your sets in, choose the highest item level 5th piece of offset OR set that keeps your caps maxed, and otherwise maxes your strength and hence DPS.
Overall, you don't want BOTH the 245 offsets. You will prob use the helm, but not the shoulders.
Thank you, these are the kinds of answers I was looking for.. and honestly, i had forgotten about using rawr.. it's been a long time since i've taken a look at that program and i didn't know how accurate it was for retris.. i used to use it on my mage, and it was pretty good there, but it could be hit or miss on certain things..
Anyway, thanks again for all the answers.

As a follow-up, probably the biggest gearing issue you'll come up against is finding enough expertise rating (plate and other pieces with strength on them seem to be lousy with hit rating). The SoV glyph is an enormous chunk, but other than that it can be tricky if you're trying to avoid paying for crafted gear. If this is the case for you, then one of the best upgrades will be the T9 legs, which for this reason blow away the 232 legs from the heroic ICC 5s (the other pieces from there are better placeholders for better-itemized emblem gear). These pants and Vengeance of the Forsaken are the only gear I currently have with expertise on them. :(
i picked up the legs last night after initially making this post (cause of atomicwolf's comments about the expertise)... with those and a little crafty gemming on my part i'm already at 26 expertise (with sov glyph) and just over 7% hit..
you're right.. those legs at
boatloads
of expertise.
