I constantly browse the forums. I look at most priests' posts, since I am a priest and want to know as much as possible.
We all strive for the perfect stat, perfect gemming, perfect perfection.
And still I think... this is a bit too much. Why? Because if the toon is decently geared without anything absurd in it, it will perfectly be able to manage any contents.
The toughest PVE challenge is raiding... but the real challenge is to understand the mechanics of the fight.
I am not a hardcore player, but once I got the mechanics of my class and of the fight, I have NEVER had problems healing (if the other players do it right of course). I am not particularly good either.
So, my random thought is, that all the perfect thingies thing, all the maths, all this stuff... actually is not required to play, it's just something extra, people do for fun (or obsession?).
WoW is easy as long as you have a basic knowledge of your toon.
I'd say not required to just play.
If you want to try to roll through a hard-mode 25-man raid, you do need a deeper knowledge of your class, mathmatics and mechanics, whatever that class may be.
As a guildy said, "wow is e-z mode to do good, not so much to do awesome"

all that is true however with all the "perfectness" you are less likely to suck...
