c.f. Dispersion
Initially reviled as a useless "utility" talent. This lasted nearly a year. Finally discovered to be an amazing dps boost in many fights, not merely a mana-regen/survival trick.
Our first-blush assessments of Life Grip will find themselves irrelevant once people find creative uses for it.

Yup, Dispersion is a talent.
But wouldn't you LOVE to have it as a regular spell that you could use in all specs?

Pezz, dearest. I'm guessing you didn't read my "reaction time" post just above yours, but just in case you did...
I've been healing for almost 5 years now. I have a priest, shaman and a paladin, all healers. Please don't talk down to me, I know how to use the right tools and I don't spam HL or GH or whatever. I try my best to pick the right healing tool for the job.
But don't ask me to monitor if
the rogue who is 40 yards away from me and already covered in spell effects is also standing in green goo
and needs to be Life Gripped instead. I'm going to heal the raid and hope for the best. Maybe he'll cloak, may he won't. But I'm not going to grab him and a) have a more competent, more aware player die instead b/c I dropped focus or b) have him scream at me while he runs all the way back to the boss. "I was gonna cloak! I swear! My DPS is dropping, you totally messed up my rotation!" Even if I did just save his miserable, backstabbing little self. ;-)
That's kind of your job though. 'What is the best strategy here?' is not defined by how orange the little bar is, or how many of them are orange. It's defined by whole situation the player is in, the short term and long term context of the fight, and your remaining mana.
Also, pelf said it as well:
One thing that I see people doing time and again when analysing these changes is forgetting that your whole style of healing is going to change. You aren't going to be able to be OCD with topping off every single little deficit of health across the whole raid. It's not whack a mole. If you can pull someone out of danger to avoid having to spend precious mana healing them, then that's a far better solution.

Yeah, but is that really worth our new lvl 85 cap spell slot?

Orange? Either you've got a Red/Green deficiency and haven't realized that the bars are actually GREEN, or you're using some kind of wacky interface mod.

Honestly, I'd rather get my heavy nuke heal at 85. Think ratchet and clank or really most progressive games at the end you get the Rhino. I'd like that please. Impress and WOW me.

Vuhdo bars that go from green down to red as the health deficit increases. Guess I should've made that clear instead of throwing a color out there, though.

I'm seeing a trend with jumping players here in WoW now... Heroic Leap is Warriors new L85 skill. Now, if we get an automatic Holy Nova or Heal when they LAND, that would make it all the more awesome.

ah I've never used Vuhdo before, that would be the case...

Shrug. I guess so. And the DPS's job is to damage
and stay alive
. But I still can't get a damn one of them to click on Lightwell, even if I drop it in the middle of melee. And Lightwell is one of the most mana efficiant, powerful heals in the game. My point is that people do not change their playstyle too radically just because the spell mechanic says they should. Neither will healers.
I don't mind changing my healing style. But it needs to be within reason. I can't always see what is happening to a player or
why
they're taking damage. I just know they're taking damage. Do I grip them? Do I heal them? My decision is always going to be the latter. If you can heal progression content and also tell when to grip or not grip, then I bow to the better player. /bow
Don't get me wrong, I love this game and I have no doubt it's going to be a cool, fun spell. It's just a little underwhelming to me, especially as an "end-game" ability.

I'm unconvinced at this point that it's going to be the only, or even the best, level 85 Priest spell. I particularly disagree with it becoming a talent; if it's a talent, it'll quickly be left out of all "acceptable" builds, and will basically wind up like Lightwell. It's a fun idea with some good utility, but certainly not a requirement - exactly the kind of talent that players are discouraged from taking.
Except that the point of the whole mastery system is to bake in all of the "required" talent points to allow people to take the fun talents and reduce the preponderance of "accepted" builds.
I kind of doubt that they will succeed in doing this, though.

Oh agreed. Burning a cooldown on someone who only had to move a little bit to avoid it but was too dumb to do so is annoying. But the thing is, when someone is falling down on their job in WoW, it's typically the healers that end up having to pick up the slack somehow.

Lifegrip = WIN.
in PvE its mostly good if you're in failure group(or if someone in your group is a failure). and if you're a part of the reason the group is failure you wont be able to use it properly anyhow tbh.
However if you got half a brain + a bit knowledge about fight you might be able to reposition people who arent doing it
perfect
but only 90%. Also some encounters you can prolly plan with dps (or whoever will benefit from getting from position Y to position X in 0.5s, melee having to move to dps something else anyone?) ahead of the fight.
in PvP.. maaaan, ill even trade penance for it. WICKED
