Anime and MyTie (aka what is the best anime ever)

You are prehaps the most knowledgeable person on anime I know, randomness.
In the past, I've had what I consider to be horrible experiences with anime. I've always found them cheap, irritating, and wierd. The plots seem to involve space aliens, lobsters, typewriters, and decapitation, all at the same time. The drawings are crudely slapped together polygons. The voices are extreme. The action scenes are so over the top they exhaust me just watching them. The drama is so surreal that I feel disjointed from it. Every experience I have had with anime has left a rancid taste in my mouth.
Now, I've decided to give anime a "clean slate". I've decided to go into it with an open mind, and give it one last chance to make a good impression on me. Lately, I've been the ultimate anime hater. I have no tolerance for that toilet water. However, now is your chance, randomness, to change my mind.
I'm going to give anime one last look. If you suggest to me a movie, I will watch it. If you suggest a TV series, I will watch 4 episodes. If you suggest printed material, I will read 2 hours of it. I will do this with an open mind, or the best I can manage. I will be critical of it the same way I am of everything, doing the best I can to check my prejudices at the door.
So now, I will give you the opportunity the suggest
THREE
anime to me. Choose wisely. Choose the best. If I am left unimpressed by the best, I will forever renounce anime as the cesspool of entertainment.
Whatever randomness agrees are the three best, will be given the chance.
TLDR: Name the three best anime for MyTie to look at. This is the last chance he is giving to anime so make it good.

The last 2 I endorse.
Heck, anything by Miyazaki.

IIRC MyTie already watched this and didn't like it?

Meh. It's understandable.

Escaflowne, although decent, isn't exactly great for people who don't conventionally like anime.
Spirited Away is, but I'm supposing that MyTie may already have been exposed to it.
I propose
Clannad
,
5cm per second
or
Haibane Renmei
.
And MyTie - don't let anyone talk you into watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, no matter how good they say it is, because you will tear your hair out and wipe the thought of 'good anime' from your mind once you trawl your way through the first 2-3 'episodes'. (It is good, just not to your taste.)

Dot Hack and Death Note (Only until a certain main character is killed off.) are both very good plot and character driven anime (or manga, in the case of Death Note). Given your distaste for over the top action sequences, they might be a bit more your preference.
Edit: Dot Hack//Sign, that is. I haven't seen Roots yet.
I personally love Dot Hack... but it might be a good idea not to suggest it to MyTie heh; way too much for that series to connect it all together lol.

I've actually seen both spirited away and Princess mononoke... both were wierd and poorly animated.

Then you won't like any of Miyazaki's movies... and seeing as that is considered the pinnacle by most fans, you don't stand a chance of finding any anime you like heh.

I'm willing to try. However, every anime I've seen has an air of self importance, judgementalness, and crazy, that combine into a distasteful bunch of entertainment I can't handle.
For example, "spirtied away", I believe shows the kids family eating a bunch of food and turning into 'pigs'. I couldn't figure out why, but then my girlfriend at the time explained that it was because they were American, and that is how Americans are viewed. I wanted to drop kick her DVD player out the friggin window. Imagine if I drew a cartoon that depicted a bunch of Japaneese people shoveling rice into their faces, looking like idiots, and then turned them into a derogatory animal. I'd have people knocking my door down to punch my lights out. The reverse is called the "Pinnacle of Anime". Pinnacle indeed.

But any of his work is great; from Kiki's Delivery Service to Howl's Moving Castle.. but again, if you didn't like Mononoke or Spirited Away, you probably won't like the rest of the stuff /shrug. Honestly though MyTie... Manga/Anime isn't for anyone, just like lots of tv series/movies/comics whatever aren't for everyone; don't force yourself heh.
A good mind-$%^& anime is Serial Experiment Lain or Neon Genesis Evangelion.... but the second one is a bad choice for your experiment here lol, you can't just watch four episodes or the movies for it and expect to get the whole thing.
How about this instead MyTie; what are your favorite genres and the like? If we know that, we can suggest things for you to watch/read.

MyTie, although I came in with best interests at heart, it appears that this thread is just going to turn into a "<insert list of favourite anime>" thread, without regard for what you might find interesting / appropriate.
I do agree with Adamsm though - we understand that you won't like over-the-top action, general over-the-top stuff. If you can suggest what exactly you're looking for, or what generally would interest you in a show of any sort, that'd be a good way to start.
In the interim, I do highly recommend 5cm per second (linked above). It's only three episodes, and you can find it on YouTube. And the music is nice.
