Anime and MyTie (aka what is the best anime ever)

Then you won't like any of Miyazaki's movies... and seeing as that is considered the pinnacle by most fans, you don't stand a chance of finding any anime you like heh.
I'm willing to try. However, every anime I've seen has an air of self importance, judgementalness, and crazy, that combine into a distasteful bunch of entertainment I can't handle.
For example, "spirtied away", I believe shows the kids family eating a bunch of food and turning into 'pigs'. I couldn't figure out why, but then my girlfriend at the time explained that it was because they were American, and that is how Americans are viewed. I wanted to drop kick her DVD player out the friggin window. Imagine if I drew a cartoon that depicted a bunch of Japaneese people shoveling rice into their faces, looking like idiots, and then turned them into a derogatory animal. I'd have people knocking my door down to punch my lights out. The reverse is called the "Pinnacle of Anime". Pinnacle indeed.
Your girlfriend obviously didn't watch the movie. They were Japanese, and they were turned into pigs because they ate food that was meant for spirits, not humans. Nothing about the movie is meant to be analogous with any kind of people. It's just a fairytale.

I'm not a fan of anime in general, too many big robots, girls who look like they should be 12 but have triple D bra sizes and wear school girl outfits, lone badasses just wanting to be left alone but forced into badassery by circumstances beyond their control, and tentacle naughtiness.
But... I did enjoy Ranma 1/2 quite a bit. The animation isn't "mind-blowing" but tells the story quite well. It's more character based than action based, and is mostly comedy. It's mainly about the title character, Ranma, who's a teenage martial artist training with his father. It starts off introducing him to the family of his father's best friend, as he's been promised to marry one of the friend's three daughters. Oh, and he's cursed. I'd tell more, but if you haven't seen it it's a bit of a spoiler.
I've shown it to other people who aren't big anime fans and for the most part they've loved it (provided they get past the ridiculously upbeat opening japanese theme). I've liked other anime, but only in the way of "hey that was good (for an anime)". Ranma was (imo) just very good. If I had to give a theme, it'd be a martial arts rom/com (and I don't like rom/coms).
Everything that MyTie has said that he dislikes about anime thus far (over-the-top'ness and polygons) feature greatly in Ranma. I'd lump it in with Haruhi - good show, but not for MyTie's taste.

I'm not overly familiar with the series, but from the snippets that I've seen, isn't Death Note a bit over-the-top exaggerated drama? Just wondering. The tv series, I mean, my girlfriend assures me that the manga is much better.
Oh, and generally - I would encourage MyTie to watch the original Japanese with English subtitles, rather than the English subs, if only because the English voice-actors overdo it and screw it up a lot of the time. Does anyone disagree?

A lot of suggestions here. Let me see if I can narrow it down.
Death Note
5cm per second
Bleach
Is this accurate?

Dragonball, the original dragonball.
Not
dragonball z.
Bakemonogatari.
Fooly Cooly. (FlCl)
I must apologize MyTie, but a fourth anime may just be included. I feel bad...
Cromartie High
(A comedy anime, not an in depth story, just comedy, it is quite funny though).

Not Bleach. That's one of the over-the-top ones. I'd say the manga of Death Note too, it seems the anime's a bit overdone. Dunno about 5cm a second though.
Not bleach or death note, they are both Americanized and terrible. They are sickening to watch.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
(Movie, my favorite by Miyazaki)
Last Exile
(26 Episode series -- 4 probably isn't enough to make judgement, hopefully they will impel you to watch more)
A third suggestion would require some sort of feedback on these two.
To be honest, if I really generalize it, I don't think most Anime is all that good. Most of the stories are not well developed, and are therefore riddled with discontinuity; they are purposefully obfuscated (so the author can claim 'depth of vision' where none exists); and worst of all, the stories rarely have a satisfying ending.
There's a few examples that are amazing though, regardless of the fact that they are anime. I recommend these two, therefore, not as a general defense of anime -- but a presentation of how the style can be used to tell a good story -- which is really what draws me into any sort of movie or show. Therefore the mere fact that a story is told in this style is not reason enough to avoid it.

I would recommend Fullmetal Alchemist. I'm more than likely wrong, but I feel that it may be the closest anime that you may be able to enjoy.

Death Note
5cm per second
Bleach
Is this accurate?
Death Note manga specifically, not the TV anime. Two hours of the manga will be significantly better than 4 episodes of the anime, I've been told.
I don't think anyone else in Randomness knows about 5cm per second, unfortunately, so I don't know if anyone is going to be able to reinforce my views on it. Apparently it's actually a movie in 3 parts (as opposed to 3 episodes, but that makes sense).
Bleach is probably too mainstream for you.
With what people are proposing, I'm almost inclined to suggest that anyone who comes in and just makes a list of animes, you can tally the votes up and watch the *least* voted shows.

I'm trusting to your (high?) regard of me to trust me when I suggest these. I used to be one of "those" people. I hated anime with a passion. It was useless and horrible. See, when I thought of anime, I was thinking of garbage like Dragonball Z and all that crap. Then a friend suggested I watch some of Mr. Miyazaki's work. I loved them. I suggest all of his work.
To date, the movies I have watched by him have been
Howl's Moving Castle
,
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
,
Spirited Away
,
The Cat Returns
,
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
,
My Neighbor Totoro
, and
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea
. Your girlfriend obviously didn't watch the movie . They were Japanese, and they were turned into pigs because they ate food that was meant for spirits, not humans. Nothing about the movie is meant to be analogous with any kind of people. It's just a fairytale.
This. It sounds to me like she was one of those die-hard anime girl fans that looked for a message in anything. If anything, the movie was about a little girl conquering her fears to save her family.
Of all of Mr. Miyazaki's work that I have seen, I believe that you would enjoy
Nausicaa
the most. Either that one or
Howl's Moving Castle
.
As to TV shows, I've only seen two. One of them,
One Piece
, I don't believe would suit you. You can check it out if you would like, however. The other one I think you might enjoy. It's called
GunXSword
. I know you said that you would only watch the first four episodes of a TV series, but I highly recommend you watch more. In my opinion, I didn't really like the series until about the sixth one. At first I thought to myself that this was just another stupid anime, but I would be forced to watch the whole thing because I had promised my friend I would. Then I got hooked. It's only 26 episodes long and each episode is about 25 minutes long. I recommend you try and see it through to the end.
You can find the GunXSword episodes
here
and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
here
. If you want to check out One Piece, you can find it
here
.
Enjoy!

As for the anime dilemna MyTie, I can't recommend much in the area. Bleach is my favorite, and that'd definitely be too mainstream for you. Sowwy. :S My advice is to watch a few more than 4 episodes of anything suggested, if you'd like to get a better view of them.
