if this guy is 80, then there's no excuse to pull 2k dps. 2k DPS enough for anything short of Sarth+Drake(s) when WotLK first came out.
Yes, but this is Toravon 25man, released with ICC, tuned for those in TOC 25 gear.

I would really get !@#$ed if I was in his place so you should feel bad.
More mad at me or you 2K dps, fully 25 man raid buffed?

About a year ago I was in a VOA 25 with a new 80 hunter. His dps was pretty bad, yet he won a roll that made several people angry. "Figures, the lowest dps gets the roll omg" was what several people said in raid chat. I mentioned that he probably needed the gear more than them so they should be happy for him.
Today that hunter consistently has the highest dps of any group it's been my pleasure to be in with him. I can say without hesitation that he's probably the best hunter I've ever met, without exaggeration. But once upon a time he was gearing up and struggling, just like every single one of you (even you miracle workers who pulled almost 3k dps at level 73).
The point of this? Oh yeah, OP, what you and the RL did sucked.I pulled 2.8k at 75 on one boss fight (5man), but it was pretty much the perfect group synergy. It does happen but it's not typical.
4k gs is right around 200 or so (give or take) average item level, so the DPS he was doing for that gear really wasn't terrible. Also keep in mind that gear score is flawed in and of itself. My rogue has a GS of 4447 right now, with an average item level of 219. However a guildmate has a GS of 4425 (22 points lower) but her average item level only shows as 204, even though she is in all epics and I'm still wearing 4 blues. As far as I'm concerned, it really isn't good for anything at all other than a rough estimate, very rough at that.
--------------------------------
That said, even though you might have a point, if I was in that raid I would never group with that raid leader again. RL did not specify GS/DPS requirements beforehand. Technically the other player got scammed. Good way to get blacklisted or even banned IMO.

In the OP's case, I would have said that with 3.9k gs, 2k DPS is at least trying and he's earned his loot. Maybe his rotation isn't straightened out yet, maybe he thought melee should chase the orbs and lost DPS that way- who knows. So, in this case, I would say the RL was being unfair. However, there ARE cases where the only fair thing is to not award loot to people who refuse to listen, cooperate or try- they're just few and far between.
My DK is MS Blood Tank/OS Frost DW with some of my tanking gear on (b/c I didn't have anything for that slot) including a ilvl 219 tank wep in my OH I was able to pull 4.5k in a VoA25 my dps GS is roughly 4k...... there is NO excuse for 2k dps in a raid... maybe unbuffed on a test dummy, but not with raid buffs.
And BTW I had only been frost DPS for about 2-3hrs when I went into that raid so I was still learning Frost's Priority system.

Then he should have been kicked. I'm not disagreeing with you in that his dps should have been higher but the point remains it wasn't complained about untill the loot dropped. That's just &*!@ty and a cop out excuse to use someone, low dps or not.

And how, pray tell, was the OP and the raid's leadership supposed to know that his DPS would be that abysmal? Trash DPS is irrelevant and a #$%^-poor barometer of anything, and if they one-shot Toravon, there was no chance to say "hey, your DPS blows, step it up or you're not getting anything".

I have a confession.
VOA 25. 1 other Ret Pally besides me.
Sanctified Leggings drop. Before I roll, I get my whisper to the RL ready. I roll a 20, he rolls a 98.
I immediately whisper to the raid leader, "Dude, he did 2K DPS on that fight." (true).
After 20 seconds, RL responds, "Do you have damage meter?"
I respond in whisper with recount showing me in the top 5 and him at 2.7K DPS.
He drops the loot in my bag w/o saying anything. The Ret Pally drops group w/o saying anything.
No one notices.
Should I feel bad? Do you forgive me?
You can't seriously think what you did was okay.
I mean, the term for what you did is "a d--- move." It's not so much that you had an issue with his DPS. It's that you had an issue with his DPS, and you weren't man enough to actually say something to everyone. You just whisper to the raid leader. And you were only going to go through with it if you lost the roll.
Which you did.
You lost the roll, then instead of saying something to the raid, like, you know, you would do if you had a pair? You send this whisper, and try to send it before the loot is distributed. After you lost. Yes, the raid leader has his hands dirty in this, but come on, man. You know good and hell well that was a d--- move.
Should you feel bad about that? I don't know. I know a man would feel bad about that. I know someone with integrity would feel bad about that. I know someone who knows what teamwork is would feel bad about that.
But you?
In the air, sir. In the air.

I would have done the same thing. People who have no skill and no desire to improve already get carried IRL, I'm not about to carry them in-game as well.
With 4k GS you should *not* be putting out 3k DPS.
That paladin does not need better gear to improve, he needs to stop being terrible and learn to play his class. *
Being nice to baddies and giving them free shinies is the best way to have them continue being bad.
On the other hand, the RL did not handle the situation properly as he did not inform the useless raid member of why he was being denied loot.
* : to the people who think ret pallies have an easy rotation that no one can possibly !@#$ up, well that's exactly why terrible players are terrible : they $%^& up the un#$%^able (or don't bother to learn the rotation in the first place "I'll just push random buttons... oooh my attacks make pretty colors...")
And to finish it off : yes we've all been terrible at some point. It's okay to be terrible when you are discovering the game, your class, etc. It's not OK when you're level 80 (implying ~200 hours of playtime at least) and have obviously been dungeoning enough to be in full epic gear.

With GS requirements for VoA these days, the paladin was simply autoattacking the boss. This is the only way to not beat 2k DPS except for not attacking at all.

Trash DPS is irrelevant and a #$%^-poor barometer of anything, and if they one-shot Toravon, there was no chance to say "hey, your DPS blows, step it up or you're not getting anything".So then maybe they should have been more particular about who they let in rather than just arbitrarily saying, hey I don't like you, after the fact. There's nothing wrong with GS/DPS requirements. Just if you're going to go by that, set it down beforehand and save everyone the aggravation. Nothing wrong with saying top DPS gets priority either. But it sounds to me like they didn't really care to do that and took any old warm body they could find to fill the raid out. Double standard.
And you can get a decent estimate of what someone is going to do on a boss after a couple trash pulls. They certainly aren't going to realize full potential, but you can get an idea if they are going to pull their weight or not.

Another situation in last VOA 25 I joined.
I'm Tank this time. Pally Tank.
I see 2 DPS Warriors, 1 Tank Warrior.
One of the DPS warriors keep saying in /raid to stop inviting other warriors and that we were full on warriors. This drew attention to him, so I decided to check him out. He was using 2-3 blue items and a blue shield (as DPS).
I called him out on it in /raid. He then responded by saying, "Oh, wrong set". I see him switch his weapons to a blue 2 hander. I don't notice what he is doing on trash.
On the boss, something on the side catches my eye...he's standing by himself on the side with a shield and 1 hander, just auto-attacking the boss. I check recount. 1K DPS. Other DPS warrior did about 7K DPS, middle of the pack.
No warrior loot drops, but if a DPS warrior item would have dropped...what would have been the right thing to do?
