The quote pyramids were getting crazy but this is my original post and since my post I have toyed with this feature quite a bit and I'll be honest and say it's a little scary what a half resourceful person can dig up.Through the feature and Facebook/Goodle I was able to dig up adresses, places of employment, pictures and much much more... So if there was a player with a vendetta or whatnot they could really do some damage. All of this from Friends of Friends ALONE.... Which by the way only needed me to be friends with a second party.. and not the main "target"
Depending on what you put online, you have two key pieces of information to go with: The account holder's name, and the fact that they play World of Warcraft.
Unless you happen to be "in the closet" in regards to your WoW habit, chances are good that coupling a name with WoW would likely pinpoint your particular target.
The people who are complaining that we're paranoid for not wanting to have our real names out there through association have apparently never tried this.
I tracked down the home address and phone number of a scam artist posing to be a debt collector given nothing but his phone number and company name; a few web searches and a phone call to his state's county clerk's office got me the information I needed to verify his address and phone. When I called him at home, he suddenly stopped harassing me...
I think the tool by itself is flawed in design... to trust one person is also to trust everyone they know. Think about it. I won't use it, it's far to sketchy a tool. So I agree with Hyperspacerebel. The difference I guess is this... why make a tool no one will use? when there currently exist plenty of ongoing similar tools that allow for FAR more functionality and fun? Xbox Live and Steam are awesome examples... Anywho.. again my two copper...
The latter part is my issue. The statements made by Hyper and the folks - "Geez, don't use it then, if you aren't going to use it as designed," - are valid; we aren't going to use it.
What we're complaining about is that Blizzard could have very easily made a system that provided the same functionality but in in a way that would make it palatable to a larger audience, simply by allowing us the option to not display our real names, and to use an alias rather than our Battlenet ID.

In response to the thread topic: Yes, but only if the friend in question chooses to.
