Blizzard ignores petitions.
Anyways its not "random" they needed to do this to make the realms work with cataclysm and they have to extend it when things do not go according to plan and something else that was unforeseen comes up and they need to delay realms coming back up for a few more hours to fix said issue.

Ugh. Look, I nerd rage at extensions to maintenance as much as the next nerd, but petitions are stupid. There are two things Blizzard will take notice of: account cancellations and violent rioting at their HQ with lots of fire. Neither of those involve petitions.

Where I have to say I agree with you all about Blizzard and extended maintenance there is something you may not know. We all agree to the terms that Blizzard has when we "Accept" to play, in the fine print of what we "Accept" scheduled maintenance is in the agreement. Unfortunately we all have to "Accept" to be able to play, so Blizzard gives us no choice unless we choose not to play. I don't think there is anyway to get around this. We all just have to accept the conditions and terms that Blizzard has, we may not like it, but thats the way it is.

It's unfortunate that you only have Tuesday mornings as your best time to play, but it's hardly blizzard's fault. They've been having Tuesday maintenance since the beginning of time and it occasionally* goes well over schedule. They can't control when something goes over schedule. It is, by nature, unexpected, or they'd schedule for it.
Most people who have been playing this game for a long time simply stop expecting to be able to play for at least the first half of Tuesday. This is reflected by the relatively small number of people logged in just after maintenance when it gets done on time.
Again, it's unfortunate that your best opportunity to play is, historically, the worst day for the servers. But there is nothing that's going to change about that on Blizzard's end any time soon. They already tried doing live maintenance (without taking the servers down) a while back. It didn't work.
*Fairly regularly when approaching a major patch, and constantly when approaching an expansion.

Yup, too true. I like playing the game, so I'm not going to cancel unless their BS gets to the point where I'm no longer having fun. I do want the BS to cease though, so...
Fiery rioting, anyone? Come on, it'll be fun! We'll flip a few cars, set a building on fire, maybe drag out and maul a few employees.

Does making you a wealthy Professional Chef allow you to bake a cake faster? no. server maintenance is there for a reason. It takes time for a reason. But im sure you would rather play longer in a very glitchy game than have the maintenance down for an extra 2 hours to fix the issues.
4 hours*

... I personally happen to have tuesdays off as my only day off each week by random designation from my boss, and I have most tuesday nights planned with friends/family...
Sounds like the problem is with your schedule, not Blizz's. Someone will be inconvenienced one way or the other, it just happens to be you this time around.

I don't expect them to change the maintenance day, I just expect them to test their maintenance more thoroughly to help people schedule accordingly.
Your are contradicting yourself here. Your saying that they should more often test the servers to see if they need to be fixed, but that also means that they have to bring down the servers more often to check if they are alright. Do you know how many people would get mad if they did that?
