I just assume everyone I meet is a 16-20 something year old guy. And I'm usually right.
The internet: Where the men are men. The women are men. And the little boys are FBI.
That is pure gold. I want that quote on a t-shirt with a picture of Chris Hansen.

I guess I'm not the regular mmo-player because I somewhat see the toon on the screen as a mirror of me. I'm after all playing and interacting with the community around me through that toon.
This part, I pretty much agree with. I get weirded out if people don't refer to me by the gender of the character I'm on -- I have several alts in a guild, and it confuses me when I'm on one alt and someone refers to me by the pronoun or name of another. I've basically gotten used to always getting called by a nick for one of them, but different people pick different nicks.
But yeah, if I can't mirror myself in a toon at least a little, I can't enjoy playing that toon.
No matter what toon im on my guild just calls me Frames

I always get called "her" "she" etc, in vent/raids even though my guild knows I'm a guy. It's what happens when you use very feminine names for your character (I prefer a name or something fitting instead of EpicMagelol). So yeah, my mage is a female BE named Rosewin. So i get called Rose a lot by my guildies, even on alts with masculine names.
I usually don't correct random people, I'll forget soon enough and it isn't worth the time. Even in my guild I just let it go, the people I raid with know that I'm a guy, but I still get called Rose. Doesn't bug me too much, I probably won't go for such a feminine name on my new main come Cataclysm, however.
However, I did pick a Female Dreanei for the waggle.

I am actually quite pleased to see the responses here, they're a whole hell of a lot better than you'd have gotten if you posted this on the official forums. Hooray for the Wowhead community! :D
I'm a guy, hetero, and I have a fairly even mix of both genders in my stable of characters. Each one of them has at least a fairly detailed backstory and personality, especially the ones I play the most. And I'm not even on an RP server, or in a guild that does RP. They just develop that way.

Ignorance and fear of something they do not understand. That about sums it up.
I have characters of both sexes on my account...
Male Troll Shaman, Female Forsaken Warrior, Female Draenei Shaman, Male Human Warrior, you name it, I've played it...
Why did I choose X sex for Y class/character? Probably for one of a few reasons:
I didn't like the combat animation of the male/female for that race. (Female Forsaken Warrior unarmed animation? Hell yes.)
I didn't like the look of the male/female of that race. (Male Draenei? No thank you.)
I already had a male/female of that race. (I think I have too many male Trolls...)
Other than Taurens (sorry my big, meaty brothers & sisters, but I don't like huge races), I've tried most combinations of races, genders, & classes.
If that makes me gay/horny/whatever, then so be it... I'm secure enough in my manhood to not let something as trivial as "zomg ^&*!ies on my avatar!1!" to lessen my choices in an MMORPG.

Because a character represents YOU! You're suppose to be the character, thats why in the game no one calls you by your name, but by your character's name. Thus, if you are a girl in WoW you should be a girl in real life. Plus no guy wants to ask every girl character they see if they are really a girl. You're making it harder for the guys to find girls.I take it you are SHOCKED, JUST SHOCKED, when that Orc Warrior turns out to be a human accountant, then? You're making it harder for the guys to find girls.I forgot WoW was a dating service. 1) Only if he is expressing himself through that character, and truly desires to become a woman. If he is obessed with women, then it is a big yes to either being turned on too much or
gay and desiring to be a woman
. You never know with authors these days.AHAHAHAHA HOLY ^&*!

First sentence says, "If he desires."Well, no it doesn't. Also "
gay and desiring to be a woman
" is after an "
or
", meaning you are presenting the two together as a single concept. And of course by representation I mean the character reflects who you would be if... If I were an orc warrior what would I be like? I guess that is quite opinionated and so men choose women characters. Please re-read this passage and realise it makes no sense. I think it needs some quotation marks somewhere but I'll be damned if I'm gonna be bothered to point out where.

Quotes are my bad.
"Only if he is expressing himself through that character, and truly desires to become a woman."
If you first read this, then you must conclude that my thesis supports the sentence when I say,
"If he is obessed with women, then it is a big yes to either being turned on too much or gay and desiring to be a woman. You never know with authors these days."
So despite the fact that there is an or, the first sentence still gives it away that I am still talking about it. I'll help you out a little here by explaining a thesis.
When you write an essay, typically you have your thesis first. This is an
opinionated
idea. This can change according to style, but most essays have it up front. The sentences in following paragraphs support your thesis. So if my thesis was, "Only if a man is expressing himself through that character, and truly desires to become a woman is he gay." Then my following sentence will talk about that more. For example this next sentence would follow it. "If he is obsessed with women, then it is a big yes to either being turned on too much, or gay and desiring to be a woman. You never know with authors these days." I could go on to say, "statistics support that more than likely he is just turned on since gays don't find women attractive. "That really has nothing to do with anything in this topic, I don't think you understand.
When you say "or", you are creating a choice. When you say "and", you are lumping two things togther. So If he is obessed with women, then it is a big yes to either being turned on too much or gay and desiring to be a woman. You never know with authors these days."
is read as:
If he is obsessed with women then:
A) he is either turned on
OR
B) he is gay AND wants to be a woman.
(these are, in real life, not the only options why someone might want to play/write as etc a character of the opposite gender, and it's foolish to think so)
this goes deeper than likes and dislikes. It's a videogame, it really doesn't.
