My 3 80s are male HU war, male NE hunter, and female DR Shaman. In my experience playing all 3 I enjoyed the female DR the most. I originally chose female cause the males look stupid but as I played I found people were a lot more friendly and much more helpful than my male toons.

Because a character represents YOU! You're suppose to be the character, thats why in the game no one calls you by your name, but by your character's name. Thus, if you are a girl in WoW you should be a girl in real life.
In the tradition of acting - arguably the source of all role-playing - it was commonplace for men to play female roles in productions. In fact, it was the norm in Shakespeare's day, and in Japanese kabuki theater.
90% of the time, regardless of the character I'm on, my guild mates refer to me as 'Wakiza' (or 'Waki'), my main; they typically only refer to me by the name of the character I'm currently playing if there are people in the group who don't know that Waki is my main character.
Of course, you're free to have your opinion. However, as someone hinted at earlier in the thread, if you really believe that the majority of female characters are played by females, you're in for a rude awakening. Since it bears repeating:
The Internet - where men are men, women are men, and children are FBI agents.

Uh.
I am?
So if I don't actually summon demons, it's creepy for me to play a warlock? If I can't actually run at full speed in plate mail for an hour, it's creepy for me to play a paladin?
FWIW, I really don't care whether people think I'm male or female. I don't particularly identify with gender; I think it's weird and creepy that people do. You know how a lot of people find transgendered people weird and creepy? I think cisgendered people are weird and creepy in the same way. It's just meat. You don't have to make a big deal about identifying with it. If your brain is wired to think a given way, great, think that way -- it's not as though you have a choice. But don't make out like it's some kind of big moral deal.
As to whether I'm making it hard for people in the game to identify "real" girls: There is exactly one person in the entire world playing WoW who has any business caring whether I'm a boy or a girl, and that person and I have spent the last fifteen years researching the topic in our spare time, and have matching rings. The rest of you can gtfo. No offense. :)

I'm a guy and my main is a female BE. I liked the animations better than those of male BE's and I rolled on a server that opened with BC; I wanted to try out the new race and the toon is now my main.
Other than that, the vast majority of my characters are male. It really comes down to in-game aesthetic, mostly the animations (it's why I don't have any draenei toons. The models are great but I think the movements are jerky and unnatural). If my main had been an orc, or undead, I would have rolled a male character. I don't make too much of characters' gender (unless it's something like "why would you ever play a female dwarf")
My guild actually has a lot of female players (relatively), all of whom have female mains, so in that subset of players I guess I'm a minority :P.

I don't see why you'd laugh at people for playing a role effectively. A good actor ought to be able to portray someone of another sex effectively, although costuming might be a bit of a challenge in some cases. But that's the thing; once the game engine is doing the costuming, I'd expect a good roleplayer to be able to effectively portray a male or female character. So the gender of the character should, from an RP perspective, be the gender that fits the character concept, and that answer isn't always going to be "the same as the gender of the player", any more than the best gender for a novel's protagonist is always going to be "the same as the gender of the author". Good writers are not restricted to writing only characters of their own gender effectively.
So what are you laughing at, exactly? That actors, writers, and roleplayers are able to do these things effectively? I don't see the funny.

I play female characters for 1 reason because their design is better than the males. Not because of the OMG @#$% comment they generaly look better to me.
Night elves
Male: look like the hulk from the waist up but from that down they look like they have some kinda muscle deficiency disease
Female: Look at least a bit more shaped right. they don't have huge muscles with small legs.
Human:
male or female are really fine by me so I generaly play male here
Dwarf
thats self explanatory male
Gnome:
Again they both look ok I got 2 gnomes 1 male 1 female (has to have pink pigtails for dramatic effect)
Dranei:
Male: Isn't as bad as Night elf but still bad I play one as my warrior but the female is better designed and goes with my priest.
Troll/orc/tauren: the Males really look good on them they really set the class how they should look. The females are Ok but males set it off more for me.
Undead: well I never really got into playing that class much and really can't tell to much difference
Blood elf:
The male version seems so gay but the female looks anerexic I don't play them exept as a pally if I have to.
As for the 2 new ones
Wogen: haven't seen the female
Goblin: both really good design but would probly play a male.

I pick the gender based on animations. Because I do that I'm in quite the pickle when it comes to Worgens... I've been thinking that I'll roll a worgen druid with a friend to experience the old new content again, but so far I have NOT liked the animations one bit.
For example:
Male orc > female orc
Male undead > female undead
Male blood elf < female blood elf
Animations are everything for me, as I can't stand to look at something that annoys me over, and over, and over.
EDIT: I also don't care what other people play, and I haven't met a single person in my five years that have cared either.
