If you really want to do your child a favor, give it books and teach it to not just read but read well. There is no greater gift you can give your child than a solid literary background. I can recommend some most excellent titles for a young child.
There are much greater gifts to give a child than a literary background, not that it isn't a great gift, but there are better ones.
For example:
Adept social skills
The ability to think and reason for themself
Morals
Being able to read doesn't guarantee you a great life, I know plenty of people who can read just as well as I can, but because their parents were abusive they have none of the above, can't hold down a job for more than a few weeks, and they are alcoholics.
They have college educations and they are very intelligent people, but they can't function in the real world because they don't know how to act around people.
Video games do give you many many things that people tend to ignore. Such as the social aspect of the game, sure she wouldn't be experiencing yet, but soon enough she'll start talking to other people and learning what can and can't offend others.
Many video games force you to use critical thinking skills to solve something. WoW is a great example of one of these kind of games, take a look at the Fury Warrior Compendium on Elitist Jerks sometime if you don't believe me.
As for morals, many video games do make you kill people to solve problems, but there are a few games out there that make you see the consequences of your actions. (Bioshock and Fable)
As for the great epics of our world in literature, many children do not find them exciting. I'm not sure what you have in mind, but it sounds like you're talking about books like Moby %^&*, All Quiet on the Western Front, etc.

kids are smarter than people give them credit for.
Exactly, I knew multiplication and stuff before kindergarten. My parents did not teach me, I taught myself. :D

I didn't say that. I simply said that WoW is not age-appropriate for pre-teens.In your opinion; WoW is no more violent then any of the so called 8-12 year old cartoons. WoW's violence is bloodless, and clean, as you see no gore or the like when something dies. It's not bad for a kid, and if they learn something, so be it. You don't see it as a child's game, that is fine, but that doesn't mean your opinions are right over everyone else.

This is a MMO and MMOs are fundamentally social. Playing this game without communication is an exercise in futility, and that's not good for the child either.Leveling, questing and farming solo are just as accessible as any single player game.It has nothing to do with ratings. It's that groups are bound to reject and torment the kid because he can't perform at the level required because he's nine years old. It's also unfair to those people to put them in the position of having to deal with his shortcomings as a young child in the first place.Who mentioned groups? It's also not in the child's interest to play in a world environment based on walking up to things and attacking them.I'm sorry, are you a child/developmental psychologist?Killing virtual things is not an appropriate way for a young child to deal with his stress and anger. A child should learn discipline and self-control, to not be an angry person in the first place. Acting out anger, even in a virtual setting, ultimately makes it grow, especially for a young childSee above. No, but it does increase the probability.
Cite your sources or shut up.This is a game. A game is a form of leisure. It is not there to teach or provide any other benefit than leisure, it is a game. To argue the game's alleged benefits is to treat it as more than what it is, which is a game. Whatever the child may get from the game, he'd get more from reading.Books are for leisure too, what is your point?

So, you are saying that my little brothers mental weakness is a myth, created by bad parents.. Aha.. I find that somehow hard to believe
Yes,not only is it hard to believe but it's quite offensive. Also when she said that 3000 year comment, i laughed. WE HAVE ADVANCED, WE HAVE IMPROVED OUR MEDICAL SCIENCE! The people did it because if they didn't they would be tortured and killed, also I can guarentee you ADD/ADHD is real, doctors have time and time again diagnosed people with it.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attention-deficit_hyperactivity_disorder
the more you know!
Aestu is a joke.
While ADD/ADHD is real, Doctors Diagnose way too many kids with it making it a laughable condition. They simply do it for the money like any other Dr. If you dont believe me then well I dunno what to tell you cause the medical field is and always will be about the money regardless of how nice or family oriented the Dr is, I work around them all day every day.
