ok im not sure about assassination, but i have tried both combat and sub, for one thing sub is funner. in sub i do more damage and have more mobility (dueling sword, ambush is not consistent)

is what i roll with, but Mutilate and hunger for blood look tempting.
this spec is confused and does not know what it is trying to do....

Hey, if you had waited one more month, this necro would be one year old.

I'm thankful for the necro.
I've recently rolled a stabby rogue and want to take her to end game.
The info in this thread has been quite useful.
But not much about ass spec hmm?

Back when I leveled my rogue in season 1 of bc, I started as "combat" like many suggested on forums. I got to level 25-ish and seriously wanted to delete my toon. The play style of combat while leveling was not really my liking. My stealth would be blown far too often and would often result in my own death.
So I switch to a Sub spec and took points to improve stealth and points to improve my movement speed while in stealth. I've always been a huge fan of any talents that increase movement speed on any of the characters that I have leveled and since I spend most of my time in stealth, it was a good option.
Now that I was sub specced, I was enjoying my character a lot more. A lot of the "collect x item from a box" quests were so much easier. Run in and sap the closest guy to the box, loot and sneak back out. Rogue to me is a stealth/sneak style class and this is the way I wanted to play it most.
I'd like to also point out that I play on a high population PVP realm and my faction is greatly outnumbered by the opposing faction. This fact in itself meant that a large part of my leveling time was spent having to deal with other players. Being sub spec I could stay stealthed 90% of the time (with movement speed increase) and avoid any unwanted confrontations.
I've now recently dug my rogue out of the closet and have leveled from 70->80 as pure mutilate pvp spec. I have loved every moment of it.
I guess what I'm saying is, some people dont like to pvp or they play on pve servers and you have to respect their choice to level as combat. But if like me, you love to engage in combat with any member of the opposing faction you come across, you will find that playing a pvp spec is much more rewarding.
TL/DR: I got bored with combat and leveled as pvp spec sub and then mutilate because its more fun to kill rather than be killed on a pvp realm. To be honest, the difference in leveling time would be so minimal between the two and if you have a clue, you are going to be doing green level quests anyway.

Just wanna know. What do you define by 'fun'? In my opinion, i would prefer a fun lvling spec than a fast lvling one. Its not really interesting to go for fastest lvling. I played wow because it was fun not because i wanted to reach max level and get geared out. Then again, i want to ask a question, should i go swords or daggers? Which is more useful for lvling and raiding?
honestly I find whole 1-58 leveling boring as hell... I did it x times and going same places doing same quests again is just boring... so when I decide to level another toon (because for me all fun of this game starts at max level (as blizzard meant it)) I just want the quickest way to get there... thats why is blizzard raising xp gain, lowering minimum lvl to obtain mounts, adding heirloom items and with 4.0 revamping whole old world to level faster...
thats why I level my rogue as combat. and I love it :D its quick and painless... just kill kill kill, no stopping to heal myself (Lifeblood is usualy more then enough), no slowing to stealth and ambush, just SS SnD SS SS ... Evi... no need to stealth at all :)

I leveled 30-60 as Hemo which suited my playstyle and therefore went a lot quicker than Combat.
60-70 as Mutilate. 70-80 as Sub was crazy fast. Ambush > Eviscerate = mob dead or at ~5% health.

There is nothing funner (Of course this is my opinion) than SHANKING people in the back and killing them before they even know it. ONE SHOTS OWN ALL
That's the Shadowstep build.
Go for it and stay at 59 twink out and you can totally shank par-geared clothies to mail at max.
Its much fun.
I stayed at 59 doing it for like 3 months lol.
I have gigs of videos with me one shotting locks and hunters! Its a riot!
To bad DKs at 59 wtf pwn rogues

Too bad you didn't notice the date, and he mentioned the 59 bracket in TBC? This thread is a year old.
And btw, I agree with Wildhorn that Subtlety is better leveling than Combat. It has nothing to do with Hemo.
The correct easy rotation is Premeditation (if not on 20-second cooldown), Ambush, (with talents that is 5 combo points already), and 5-point Eviscerate. If the mob isn't two-shotted, do 1-2 Hemo's as needed to finish them off. If Premeditation is on cooldown, if you're killing mobs faster than 20 seconds each, do your 1-2 Hemo's before Eviscerate. Rinse, Repeat.
One thing people didn't mention is the downtime. With Combat, you take a whole lot of damage while the mob is beating away on you. With Subtlety, because you're basically 2-shotting everything, you almost never have to stop to eat. Leveling is like PvP: you want to burst down the target is quickly as possible to minimize downtime. Combat is better sustained damage for raids and whatnot, but only when you don't have to worry about taking damage yourself.
People who say Combat is better for multiple mobs are ignorant for pulling multiple mobs on a Rogue in the first place. Rogues are arguably the most fragile class in the game. I'd take a clothy with PW:Shield or Soul Link or Ice Block anyday over a fragile Rogue. And with Sap and stealth, and even Vanish, you should not be taking damage from multiple targets at once. And who cares if you beat 2 at one time? By the time you finish eating/bandaging to fill your HP, I've already killed my 3rd mob with Subtlety. Not to mention Shadowstep helps me jump quickly from mob to mob, saves run time, and gives a bonus to damage/burst every 30 seconds.
Then again, for a new player, Combat is definitely an easier rotation. I've PvP'd before and can use Subtlety to its full extent. For a new Rogue, or a new player to the game, I would say try Combat simply because it's easier to learn, although slower leveling than Subtlety.
All in all, Subtlety for the win!

combat might be good but you cant beat the ambush crits, and even when it doesn't crit, it gives you 3 combo points :P
