How important is it to modify your unit frame?

Mostly just curiosity. People seem to swear by these addons but I've always stuck with the generic default that WoW came with. All I have is Pawn, Auctioneer, and now Altoholic. Are they really that important? Especially for somebody who tends to just solo/duo.
Also have the Wowhead client of course :P

For solo play, it's not that important (although it can help you be more efficient).
For end-game content (raiding), and even Heroics, having a well set-up UI can be a key factor in how well you perform.

You don't NEED addons. They just make certain things easier or better looking. If your fine with what you got, don't bother fixing it.

You NEED add-ons if you want to play to your fullest potential.

so your saying that having addons makes the player better? now dont get me wrong i use addons and i wouldnt be without my bar mod but the games donesnt need addons but thay do help in lots of ways, like i use recount but if i didnt i would still be doing the same dps as i do with it.

Precisely what it is about add-ons that make players better.
When you take your eyes off of the center of the screen to look at your HP/MP, you run the risk losing track of what's going on in the battlefield (i.e. more apt to find yourself standing in fire). I use a HUD to know what my HP/MP is at all times, and I don't have to look away from where my character is standing. An alternative would be to put my HP/MP frame closer to the center of the screen.
How about Decursive? One-click decursing? Yes, please. Personally, I use Pitbull 4 and Clique for my decursing, but that's just personal preference.
Paladins quickly organize their raid-wide buffing and buff with single clicks. Try that with the default UI. While you're at it, enable the latency portion of your Blizzard cast bar. Are add-ons absolutely essential? No. Can they make a player better? When properly configured and laid out, an emphatic yes.

Don't make that think you need one though, I know a gal that has the default UI spare 2-4 addons that's is in ICC heroics, and has done up to Sunwell when it was end-game.
This means nothing. Just because someone does it doesn't mean it's suggested, let alone encouraged.
Add-ons do increase how well you play. Required? No, but you could do a lot better with them.

Add-ons do not actually make you play better, at all. All they do, in my eyes, is make it
easier
to perform your best. Try 100% with add-ons and try 100% without them and you will get the same result, if you ask me.

No.
Addons are absolutely necessary to be fully effective as a player, and players who refuse to acknowledge this aren't "refusing to rely on a crutch" or "playing the game as-is", they're simply playing not as well as they could be.
Using addons isn't a substitute for skill, it IS skill.
Without addons:
-A player cannot move the unit frame to eye level (in direct response to the OP), which is necessary to minimize eye movement and consequently reaction time
-A player cannot see boss timers which encounters are designed around and are necessary to complete them correctly; for example, Shadow Strike timers on Anub, or Defile/Valks/Infest/Raging Spirits on heroic LK
-A player cannot put up marks in a coordinated way which is again necessary for many encounters; for example, heroic Sindragosa or heroic LK
-A player cannot see absolute threat values; Blizzard's integrated threat meter, which shows threat as a percentage, is conceptually incorrect
-A player cannot see what his character is doing on a real-time basis without an improved scrolling battle text as the Blizzard one is difficult to read and uninformative
-A player cannot get a damage breakdown, which is necessary to work out issues when learning encounters
These are things which are extremely useful for progression, and they can't be done without mods. Hence, not using mods reduces a raider's potential significantly. There are many other such examples, and that's why ability to use mods effectively is part of skill.
Yes.

Add-ons do not
make you play better.
Add-ons will however,
allow you
to play better.
Contradiction. If I'm using the add-ons, which allow me to play better by your logic, doesn't that make you play better?
Forgive me for having an opinion.
You're forgiven. But that holds no grounds because that's like saying the sky is purple. Sure, your opinion says it's purple, but the fact is that it's blue.
Also, add-ons are not important to solo play. You can do just fine without them. Raiding? Yes. There's a reason any good guild asks for a picture of your UI and add-ons and deny people whose are terrible.
