Nope, I do not tell them I play WoW. I'm pushing 30 and ever since I turned 21, people have been treating me differently, when I say that I play... "Oh, screw them! What do they know?" I hear you say. Well, they don't know much... But
I
know that some of them are my superiors. Some of them I have to work with for another 1-2-5-15-25 years... I don't need them to talk behind my back, pointing fingers and shaking their heads at me... Much, much,
much
easier to tell them that I only play on the Wii from time to time...
That
they understand and can relate to.. WoW? Hmm, not so much...

Actually no tbh; a lot of my friends are quite into xbox and ps3 (we're all like 14) and even the nerdiest among them laugh at WoW... So I don't think I'll be telling any of them anytime soon.
The funny thing is, they probably ALL play WoW, and each of you is too afraid to admit it. :-P

I don't start a conversation with it, but if they ask I won't lie, and sometimes if they look like the kind of person who would (I do not mean nerdy, I mean into fantasy and a gamer or whatnot) I'll ask them. I've found that, even with the people who think it's nerdy absolute, if you don't try and hide it they'll respect you more.

I've been playing wow since 06'. My computer is in my room, and ive managed to keep it a secret from my siblings and my parents... for FOUR years!
Basically, I've had to save money to go buy hardware than enables me to alt+f4 and return to the desktop in under 1.5 seconds, in-case they knock on the door, or come up the stairs..... This makes it really hard to raid, and do things like arena.
Thank god for game-time cards. If you buy them with cash, its completely untraceable...
More on topic: I have a small, tight-knit circle of friends, and we all play wow, so we talk about it openly... but generally, I avoid mentioning WoW in conversation with anyone else, unless I know them really well, they bring it up themselves, or they talk about other RPGs/MMORPGS.
I'm thinking of "Coming out" to my parents about my secret WoW life. LMAO.

Family:
I've got a 12-year-old nephew who plays now and then on his uncle's account (other side of his family), so he thinks I'm pretty cool. He watched me finish World Explorer last summer. My sister-in-law and brother-in-law both play, so we often form a family group - we've all got toons between 70 and 80. All of my brothers and my sister are gamers to some degree, so at least nobody gives funny looks even though we play a variety of games. My wife just rolls her eyes whenever I talk about it, but I think the fact that her sister plays has helped...
Friends:
It doesn't come up much, and I don't normally make a point of it. I definitely have a few friends who wouldn't be very understanding.
Coworkers:
One of my coworkers was actually the one who got me started in WoW through RaF. Through him I also found out that another coworker plays too. I work at a software consulting company, so most of us are gamers to some extent.
Since I'm a consultant I'm often in client offices. I don't raise WoW in normal conversation, but I do have some silent witness - the wallpaper on my computer and phone are both set to the Horde logo. This led to an interesting conversation that I overheard near my desk. At this particular company my desk was between two different managers. I was standing by the desk of one of them when the other was walking by with one of the people that he managed. The underling pointed at my screen and said "That's an odd-looking logo. What is it?" Without even blinking, the manager replied, "Oh, that's the Horde symbol from World of Warcraft." I don't know if he played - never had a chance to ask - but I thought it was cool that he at least knew... :)

Every single person I met I ask him if he plays wow.
I'm 14 years old and all my classmates play WoW.
We allways make jokes like :
''Hey.Jason''
''What?''
''I've got the frostmourne in my backpack''
''Hahaha. And I have the Ashbringer!'
''Nooooooo. xD

Most of my guy friends know I play WoW, and although they don't play it, they aren't really against it, since they all play MMO's, One played it for a couple months before he went to Australia for a couple of years, the other doesn't want to play it cuz he doesn't like Pay-2-play MMO's, although I stick to my point that I pay less for games nowadays because I play WoW (Instead of $60 a month, only 15).
I do everything in my power to make sure my family doesn't find out I play, due to their hatred for Warcraft because of 2 guys that were avid players, but were also the stereotypical basement dwellers.
And although I don't go "Hi, I'm Drefanator I'm a level 80 mage with a gearscore of 6400" If I hear someone talking about WoW, I'll pop in to their conversation. And I'll randomly through out WoW quotes just for myself, but if someone around me gets them, that's awesome.

No, because it's still much more ridiculed and frowned upon than other games (although people I know spend more time hiding behind a wall in CoD than I do exploring another dimension of characterisation). It's rather a double standard, but I can live with it.

I absolutely do. Recently was at college and was talking with a friend about WoW. Mentioned Lich King and two others in the room perked up and came over to say they play too. Just think, if I had kept that to myself I wouldn't have gotten to know those people.

I have always been pretty open about my hobbies. Most of my friends and coworkers know that I used to play WoW and now play CoH. No one gives me a hard time about it.

My family, friends and work mates all know I'm addicted to WoW. My brother envies me but the rest of my family and my friends all wish that I 'got out more' and didn't sit in front of a computer all day though it's irrelevant to them which game it is. My workmates give me stick about it which doesn't bother me as we all rib each other about anything we can think of. My supervisor's cross mate plays as do a few others around the place so we chat about it now and then.
I have an advantage over you, though. I'm 45, single and financially secure so I couldn't care less about what people think about me or my hobbies. I've also travelled a fair bit and done and seen a lot so it's not like I'm 'wasting my life' as some people think I'm doing.
It's not something that a majority of people do, like watching telly is, so it's not something that I'd bring up in casual conversation much but if they ask me about my hobbies, or whatever, I'd tell them.
Oh, and it helped me give up smoking so it can't be that bad, surely?
