I'm 36 (almost 37) and I'm a WoW gamer. So is my wife. (Though, she's 23, and a hottie) I don't give a damn if people know or not. Either they will understand, or they will not. But we all have our own "thing". I know people who love mountain climbing. I don't. But I can at least respect their interest, and I expect them to do the same. I'm still a father of three, and a contributing member of society. Anyone who has any odd ideas about what my enjoyment of computer gaming means is probably being prejudicial and ignorant.
However, I remember a decade ago, when younger friends of mine were being singled out by their school administrators, according to a set of ridiculous FBI criteria (a witch hunt), because they wore black, or played computer games... All of this, following hot on the heels of the school massacre in Columbine.
I suppose that one does have to be concerned for how some see such things. I do not flash my "Wowitude" like a prancing guy in a jock strap, in a gay pride parade. I don't bring it up at work, because it doesn't relate to my work in any way that is anything but peripheral. But I also do not act ashamed of it.

Thought I would bring this thread back alive! I really liked this topic........
A couple years ago (okay like 10 years ago) I dated this guy who was really into PC games and I remember thinking that was sooo nerdy! Ironic though that I play WoW now.
I normally don't tell people that I play WoW (Yes, I'm kinda a closet WoW player) but after awhile I might mention that I play the game. I've been surprised over the past couple years though how many people I have met (through work, clubs, sports, etc) that play WoW. In fact one of my co-workers plays and I can't count how many times he and I will be talking about WoW related stuff and our other co-workers will give us funny looks. Oh well..

Yes I will tell people I play wow. It is the cheapest entertainment you can get. Other people enjoy spending 4 months of wow game time in 1 night and get pissed from drinking, I don't...
I'm a casual wow player and have nothing to hide about it. However I will not talk about wow nonstop if the other person doesn't play it as well. There is more than life than playing wow and well I find it relaxing and entertaining so I try to keep a balance on going out, watching movies, spending time with acual RL people etc.

Heck yes I tell people I play World of Warcraft. I might not go around screaming it, but I think people take one look at my hoodie or t-shirt on most days and would know anyways. (Huge WoW-swag nerd.)
I like being called a nerd, or a geek or whatever. I'm a gamer. I'm a girl. I'm engaged, and have a life outside of WoW. Who cares? :)

Its sort of a "find out on their own" thing.
I'll be on my computer and then they'll be
"You play WoW?"
and then I'll say
"Yeah"
then
"Who the hell let you in my house?"
.

Yep I'm 34 and a mother to 3 kids and pretty much everyone knows... actually most people say "you dont look like someone plays warcraft" - yet how am I suppose to look? lol
I dont care what they think. If anything hubby annoys me more with his comments, calling me a Nerd etc yet he can play PS3 games like GTA, etc and its class as cool.. I said "they all games babe, doesn't matter what it is, if you play GTA for 5 hours then your a nerd too" :P

I would love to... But i play football, swim, and water polo.. I just don't want to deal with people saying "Going home to play WoW? *chuckle*"
It just won't feel good. So i don't tell people. I'm also in highschool. Toughstuff right thur..
*Edit*
I believe that everyone calls it a nerdy game BECAUSE
It requires a little more brain use.
It has "mythical creatures"
It's on the computer....Let's face it console gamers, have more of a say than PC gamers...

Ok there are a few things that people don't seem to be "getting" about this issue.
First of all, this game does NOT require more brainpower than other games. In fact, I would say it requires significantly less, and I would even go as far as to say that this requires the least amount of active thought among games that are played "hardcore" (I.E., not games like "That's So Raven" or the like). The MMO gameplay style that most games follow nowadays is one of the easiest to grasp and easiest to master, especially considering the amount of macros, addons, and guides that exist nowadays to practically play the game for you. Once you get your rotation and keybinds into muscle memory, you can literally watch TV and do a high-end raid at the same time with very little increased risk of failure (yes, I have tried it).
Second off, the reason why WoW players are significantly more stigmatized than other gamers is because it requires a significantly larger time investment than most games out there AND, the part that seems to be (consciously or subconsciously) evading everyone's minds, it is often viewed as (and used as) an alternate reality to life. Even someone who played CoD or Halo over 5 hours a day doesn't get the kind of crap that a WoW player gets because he isn't playing a game where you create an in-game avatar and explore a massive world where you eat, drink, and quest with "friends". The large majority of people who play WoW are significantly more disconnected from reality than other gamers. People think that WoW players would rather live in Azeroth than on Earth (which, sadly, is oftentimes true.) How many times have you put off doing something, even something fun like hanging out with friends, just to keep questing or raiding?
Finally, the "Playing WoW is a wiser use of money than going out to a bar, spending over 30 bucks and getting drunk for one night" argument is not only sad and misguided but also is, lets be honest, just a way of rationalizing your continued playing.
PS - For those of you who don't realize how WoW manipulates you psychologically, read this:
