You're not squishy, I'M SQUISHY! =P
.
Like a grape between your toes?
For the differant toons that can be mages I see alot of Gnome for Alliance and Forsaken for Horde.
Want would be your second profession I don't see yall keeping mining even if it would help with the squishiness. So wants the secondary profession thats taken?
I normally like picking my toons by some of the racials that they can have but those are still questionable as we don't know whats staying or going when Cat. comes out. Unless any of you have some inside info?

You need slows while questing? With 2.5k dps?
Where did I say I get 2.5k dps?
Bosses!
That Icy Viens and combustion every fight. Secondly, considering I'm getting 3-4 shotted, and have no way of healing myself, yes the slow is necessary.
Way too low for FFB to surpass FB.
My experience contradicts that. My experience > your word.

I can't say that I have ever solo-quested as Fire, but I found a conventional Frost build to give me sufficient slows, or an Arcane build to give me the DPS I need to kill a target before it hits me.
Fire (or FFB, even), would appear to be very suboptimal in a non-dungeon environment.
As for race:
PvP: Human / Blood Elf
PvE: Draenai (fire mages need their hit-sies!) / Troll

You'd think so, but Fireball (or Pyroblast, if you don't mind the wait) > Fireball > Dragon's Breath > Fireball > Instant Flamestrike > Blast Wave > Instant Flamestrike > Ice Lance to finish because it looks cool > Maybe throw a Fireblast in there somewhere when it'll stun...
Basically, not a lot reaches you. Elites are hard though. You run out of 'stay away' buttons faster than frost and you need them more often.

Did you test glyphed Fireball vs glyphed FFB?
Duh?
I may only have 14 days played on my mage, but I'm not a newb to WoW.

Well good you did Gnub, cuz nao i found it =D
I'm normally a facerolladin, with a hunter on the side and now a fire mage for dressin =P
Anywho, lvlin fire is imo a ton more fun than frost, went 10-75 frost on my old mage, and even started this as frost till 36... Anyway, this char had been sitting around for 2-3 months doing nothing, so i made a bet with a guildie wether i could pop it to 80 before cata, just to give me a realistic goal.
So now, day 4, started as 36, where i went fire, and i am now /following a paladin mate through Ramps for some fast lvl's. In this is the first real boosts i am getting so i know how the questing part was, along with the LFG's.
And well... my first experience DB and Firestarter, was awesome. Except i never really found a tank would could manage the insane bursts. For soloing I feel like i got a lot more effective tools than i ever did as frost, with 2 "waves" to stop mobs from getting to me, an instant "stop-what-ya-doin" breath and flamespikes to top them of^^ Insane burst is what makes you go fire imo, and the fact that you get them so early, well somewhat, is awesome. Last thing to say is, what ever makes you have fun in a talent tree, generally helps you lvl faster. And well, even a 0/0/0 <class> can get to 80 xD
Also thanks for the Engi idea, sounds fun =D

Mm, Gnub, I'd actually consider this a bit overzealous....
There's a different environment to 'let's chat about it' threads in different forums. If you have a 'let's chat about Mages' thread in the mage forum, it'll be dominated by "do this, gem that" posts until people stop chatting. If you have it in the Paladin forum, then the Paladin regulars (for whom this thread was created) can chat as freely as they like.
It was good of Zakkhar to come in and provide his input on spec usefulness, but really, the thread was primarily for the purposes of general discussion about the class that causes Paladins the biggest nightmares in PvP. And the sorts of fun that we're having playing said class, but specifically from the ex-Paladin point of view.
If you don't mind, I'm sure the Paladins would like to have their thread back.

Agreed. I feel that the central feature of this thread is the fact that it was a discussion between the paladin regulars (that was the reason it got created in the first place). As such it seems better suited to the paladin forums.

To help with squishiness, Herbalism can work too - the HoT can be quite useful. Plus, combine it with Alchemy for free healing pots at higher levels.
Having said that, what's wrong with miner mages? It fits in with the Gnome theme :P

I don't have a second profession. I have all my gathering professions taken care of, and I haven't gotten around to another crafting one.

My response was more concise ;)

I wanted to contribute... but my mage is Frost specced... XD
Aside from that, I have to say that I haven't had this much fun leveling since I first leveled my pally.

Alright, here's a question: should I respec out of Improved Fireball once I get Scorch, glyph that, and use that instead while leveling? The .5 sec increase to cast time going from rank 3 to 4 is a royal byatch.
EDIT: YAY! My bubble-hearth worked! :)
You
can
use Fireball. I did, and didn't run into many major problems. Most of the arguments for Scorch sound reasonably good to my untrained ears, though.
In a similar vein to this question, should I start using Frostfire, now that I've hit 75?
