Tragic. Hoping for the best in the recovery of the catastrophe, and that noone here is directly affected by it in any way. :/
Still, I couldn't help but think about

Japan learned a lot from the Kobe quake 1995. Most buildings are earthquake retrofitted. Earthquake drills are a common part of their lives. They've been preparing for this for the last 15 years. Honestly, I'd be surprised if the death toll was above 1000 and I think most of those will be due to the tsunami.

On top of the natural disasters, authorities reported that several of the nuclear power facilities in the region went into emergency shutdown when the quake hit; at least one of them was on fire (now possibly extinguished), while another reports that its cooling system has failed completely.

Are there any related deaths?

CNN is reporting "hundreds of bodies" in the Tsunami affected areas, but there isn't much information that I've found about the the areas hit hardest by the quake's effects. However, it could have been much much worse. The epicenter was somewhere around 150 km off the coast, imagine if it had been under a major city like what happened during the Kobe quake.

The last I read were 90 confirmed. However, BBC was reporting that police confirmed anywhere from 200-300 bodies on a beach near Sendai (close to the epicenter), which appeared to have drowned.
