im done with the books. its pretty clear that the author doesent have a clue how to write a book. he builds up tons of history about characters, and then he just kills them off because he had a change of heart and want to make another character the main one. im watching till you see hodor then im done with the %^&*.
I'm speechless. Now, I
do
realize that peoples' opinions may differ, but you
know
that George R. R. Martin is widely considered among the best Fantasy-writers there is, right? I don't mean to come across as hostile(but I will anyway), but I think you're the one with no clue on how to write a book.

Not saying it's the case here, but Justin Bieber is widely considered to be a great musical artist. Popular opinion is not always correct.
I've never read the books, but the story does seem to exhibit the whole "build up one character and then remove them from the story entirely" thing. I don't really think it's a bad thing, though, honestly, it's just a very antagonistic way to write, which is something that you don't see often.

Yeah, I personally love that style because I find it more interesting, but I also understand why people wouldn't like it. You can't say he's a bad writer, thats for sure.

People die, folks. Martin doesn't build characters up only so he can then kill them off, he just likes his world complete. Plus, how many
viewpoint
characters have died in the series? About 5 would be my guess, and that's a little generous.
One thing that sets Martin aside from most other authors is his ability to juggle so many plots and so many characters - which is an admirable skill for an author. If he, like other authors, had stuck to only 2-4 main characters, the books wouldn't be the same, we wouldn't get to understand the motives of everyone in the world.

Actually, when you think about it...
The only non-prologue viewpoint character who's died and stayed dead was Ned and that one knight from book four whose so unimportant I don't even remember his name (I think he only had one viewpoint chapter). Catelyn died but came back (although her viewpoint's ended, that's for sure) and I'm pretty damn sure that Brienne didn't die at the end of book four.

Think of it this way, folks: in real life, there's not a single hero (or heroine) that the world revolves around and who needs to stay alive for some reason. Martin's just having his world emulate the real world in that aspect - he may have a few dozen or so "main characters", but they're all still able to die, much like the "main characters" in our world.

Fathios, the Onion Knight? I thought he lived though.

He's considered the best by teen girls and young boys, not the critics. Almost everybody who's read his books, regular people, old, young, and the critics agree he's one of the best fantasy writers alive.

Robert Jordan *grumble*grumble*
That man isn't quite as good as Martin and juggling plots and characters...

I don't believe Davos is dead until he actually dies onscreen...er, on-page? Whatever, you know what I mean. That kind of thing's just too unreliable, it's why I don't believe Sandor or Gregor are dead either. And it's partially denial, since Sandor and Davos are two of my favorite characters. Gregor can totally suck a @#$%, though. #$%^ everything about that guy.
SO MANY SPOILERS

I'm fairly sure Gregor's dead. It's been a couple years, but he's the one that took the poisoned spear to the armpit, yes? Also, what happened to Davos again?

Yep, he is. And Davos wasn't a POV character in
A Feast For Crows
, but he was mentioned in one of Cersei's chapters as being executed by either Roose Bolton or one of the Freys, I forget which. But it's bull!@#$ until George R.R. Martin actually describes it to me, and since he's a POV character in
Dance of Dragons
(which apparently takes place simultaneously with
Feast For Crows
), I suspect we'll find out whatever the true outcome is. I don't think he'd actually have a POV for him after having Cersei literally say "lolheded" if he really died but...then again, this is Martin.
Don't kill The Onion Knight, Geogie! T_T

Definitely true, although I have my doubts, considering that Eddard was technically beheaded from Arya's point of view (granted, she was watching, but still). I hope to hear something about it, but I would be sad if he died, since he's pretty much Ned 2..0

Exactly. Ned, only
smart
more savvy. Which in a way makes him even cooler; he accepts that people are absolute scumbags, but decides to be honorable anyway, instead of being like Ned and assuming everyone *cough*Petyr*cough* would act as honorably as him.

Lol yeah, the entire book I was sitting there thinking "Ned, you're a retard. Ned, you're really a retard." Especially when he Confronts Cersei about the incest and then leaves her alive and unthreatened and just returns to the keep. I was like "The ^&*!, Ned? You've just signed your execution."

Oh god. I want to look at those spoilers so badly. Almost done with book 2 and I already peeked at one and regretted it. I will resist.

Major spoilers for all the books:
So I finally found the article that is the main reason I believe both the Clegane brothers could be alive. It's a long read, but an interesting one, and it's one of my favorite theories about the books.
