I've been getting more used to the news site and have a few comments to add to my earlier post.
The colors are still a bit irritating to the eye for long term reading. I'm glad I have unlimited internet, because the only way I've been able to read comments on most posts is to find the same article in the General forum.
The comments box is so. terribly. slow. Posting for the recent contest showed me it has not improved at all since launch (Firefox 4.0.1, WinXP SP3 if it helps) and posts of even two sentence's length often have to be re-typed since the second half is cut off because it takes too long to show. Oddly enough, the reCaptcha pane on the same page did not have this lag problem. I would estimate that characters show up every 0.8 seconds or so in the news comment box, whereas they are instantaneous in the box I am currently typing in. Because of this, the ONLY comments I have made from the news site are the ones for the contest, because I had no other option. If I feel strongly enough that a comment is warranted from me, I will find the article in the forum and post there.
My other main aggravation with the site is the panes on the righthand side. The Blue Tracker in particular is crazy making for me. The icons MOVE and drag my eye away from what I'm trying to read. This kind of distraction is one reason I have FlashBlock and AdBlock enabled for most sites. I would love the option to collapse or disable the side boxes.
Good to know you're still keeping tabs on this subject Ashelia. I'm hoping some of the tweaks being contemplated will help make tracking Wowhead news more fun and less of a hassle for those of us who have issues with the new layout.

I now that most websites do not care for people using ad-block, and I believe that the same is true for NoScript. I do use NoScript though. Wowhead.com is on my white-list, not becuase I trust all your ad providers, but because I believe that you deserve compensation for your work. When I click a link on Wowhead that was put there by Wowhead I've gotten used to it just working. Now I get sent on occasion to wowheadnews.com and I get a mostly darkened site that tells me that "This site makes extensive use of JavaScript. Please enable JavaScript in your browser." I check the url and it is not wowhead.com.
The first time I saw it I thought your site had been hacked and I put wowhead.com on a browser session script block. I figured it to be a poor attempt as they didn't even use your iconic icon, and the graphics for the ptr-patch notes had over lapping text. I get my fair share of emails trying to send me to b1izzard-account-security.com.
Putting this on a separate domain is what has discouraged me, coupled with purposeful lack of announcements, I had no reason to trust it. It wasn't wowhead.com. I middle click links as I read an article so that I can get to them later. When I discover that the page did not load in a readable fashion I just exit, hit + not read = no comment.

Holy crap you're not kidding. I don't know how they managed to spike my CPU usage just from my typing into the textarea, but they've done it. That would drive me insane if I really wanted to comment on something.

On my phone, if I try to type a response to a thread, each letter takes a perceptible amount of time to show up with a freeze-lag of sorts while it's coming. I wonder if there aren't any optimizations that could be made to their preview code. Or, maybe just a checkbox to toggle it off when you don't care.

I don't think it's phone or preview related. The box appears the same on wowhead.com as wowheadnews.com but there is no perceptible delay in a charater appearing on wowhead.com, while there can be as much as a 45 second delay on wowheadnews.com when I'm trying to post.

Is the slow comment/preview issue
ever
going to be sorted out on the news site? I honestly can not believe you have known about this issue this entire time and it still isn't fixed. /sadface
Every time I go to comment on something it frustrates me to the point where I just don't bother. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

One huge dislike for me is that all the model viewer links default to Java. Please change this to Flash or let us pick what to default to. I am sick of Java taking 90 years to load and then ultimately either not loading or just crashing my browser.

Honestly, this is just my personal opinion, but the "
Discuss this article
-> 26 replies" seems counter-intuitive.
First off, it says 'discuss' and 'replies' instead of 'comments' so people are like 'huh, what?' It sounds more like a facebook thing (and the new 'like' button is ugh, I'm really not into facebook although I know like 99% of people are).
The actual 'leave a comment' button is below some other big buttons in the way for 'related articles' so if people simply stop scrolling down (or they're looking at it from the main page and not from that article's exact page) they won't even see the 'leave a comment' button.
And secondly, by making the amount of comments so small in text, in comparison to the big bold 'discuss this' button, I dunno, maybe the small text makes it subconsciously less desirable? "So I make a comment, so what, this tiny little number goes up by one, big whoop."
I dunno, just tossing ideas around here. But I can say that first time I saw the new layout, I was more interested in reading than in commenting and when I decided to comment on something, I found the comment system different and therefore slightly uncomfortable without really being able to say exactly why.
The only changes I can suggest, and I don't even know how helpful they would actually be, is to change 'discuss this article -> X replies' to 'Leave a comment -> X comments', change the fontsize of X comments to be equal to 'leave a comment', and put the 'related articles' in the sidebar instead of the below bar.
Also, dunno if this is related or not, but I for one like the wowhead database way of sorting comments by date or 'highest rated' and if sorted by date, having a semi-threaded display. This is more of a forum-based thread with recent posts on the last page (and no way to sort them to newest first which tends to be the standard for 'comment on this headline'-type sites). Also no way to rate comments either. =/

You may be seeing less comments because comment submission is buggy! I just tried submitting a comment several times using different browsers, and landed on a failure page each time. Maybe you should check your logs for a systematic problem with comment submissions.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.
I agree that the discuss this is awful implementation (it's been ticketed to be changed for months now) and I also agree that commenting is a headache without a real reason why. It's hard to explain which makes it hard to fix.
The commenting bug is something that desperately needs to be fixed, but database always gets priority, so I will make an effort to get some spotlight sooner rather than later.
I loathe the wowheadnews site, and my entire site visit is diminishing because of it.
It doesn't help that every other link redirects there rather than the forum. The news site has BIG SHINY COLORFUL BUTTONS everywhere. I feel like I'm in kindergarten.
The news site does not have a short list of topics. If I want to skip something, for instance, I have to scroll past the whole bloody entry to get to the next one.
The information is duplicated between the news site and the forum. So why would I want to go to the news site with all its garbage to get the same stuff I get from the forum?
I don't get why the Wowhead staff has such an affinity for the wowheaadnews site, but I find it really irritating.
Oh well. It's not like I'm paying for membership any more, so of course do whatever. I've actually migrated more to the official forums -- it's less annoying, even with the high percentage of forum trolls.
I don't really understand why you would say you went to the official forums because of disliking WHN--WHN isn't forums, so it's not really comparable. Am I missing something here?
We crosspost the news on the forum (with the same comments) so that people who dislike the layout have an option of seeing it in the normal layout. We have done that long before WHN.
Additionally, I don't get why you felt the need to say we love Wowhead News; this thread wouldn't exist if it were so and I don't see us gushing about it. The designer who did the project isn't with us anymore and I think he was the only one who "loved" the final product.
The only helpful piece of information you offered was the short list of topics. That's something we can fix and play around with. But our apparent egos, official forums, and duplicated information (which was happening for years prior, /blog was to the forums then) isn't constructive. Please try to be constructive to help us out rather than tell us that you loathe us.

I don't know if someone else is having the same problem, but it's mainly a problem with the form itself that keeps me from commenting on news, though I don't do it often. It might be a client-side problem, but when I'm typping my message in, it's roughly one-caracter per second that is written. Writting a message of 120 caracters long, it could take me 30 seconds to write and I'll just be sitting in front of my keyboard looking at every letter that I've hit being written slowly until the end of it comes for the next 90 seconds. It's the only site where I have such an issue, or very very very (did I say
very
?) rarely on some other website. There is something heavy to run in that website and I don't know what exactly. And I'm not running a 15 year-old computer. It's powerful enough to run WoW mainly at high settings.
Another point, from my very own point of view, not to discredit the awesome work you guys have done on Wowhead News (I trully think it is), but wowhead.com/news.php was just fine, don't you think? I was more attracted to, let's call it news.php.
I somehow feel like I'm entering my favorite bar to talk about WoW and other stuff (come and say Hi in the Macro & UI forum :P) and when I want to read the news, I have to go somewhere else. It's not like sitting at a table and taking the news paper and enjoying my drink. I don't know if you see the image there though. ^^
... Just read through the last page of this topic and it seems it's a somewhat common problem with the form itself taking ages to see your message fully typed in.
Using Firefox 3.6.18, WinXP SP3. Also tried with my version of IE8. Same problem.

We actually just hired a designer and her first day was last Monday--so a lot of changes here and there will slowly happen. Hopefully these blog ones can be addressed.

Her name is Shelbi, she had designed our logos back in 2008/2007 before Noxy had. She was a former WoW Insider columnist too. We'll probably post a little welcome post with our next site update ;)
