Carl is part of the new breed. In the comics Rick has this conversation with Abraham about how some people have a switch flipped in their head and throw all their civility out the window, they are the ones who survive while people who try and hang on to what they were wind up walking around as a corpse. Carl is growing up in the undead world, unlike Rick and Andrea and Michonne who had to become hardened after living a soft life for so long, he's growing up hardened.
He's even more hardcore in the comics currently, he's actually done necessary things even his father couldn't bring himself to go through with. One of my favorite lines was when Neagen (a new villain) first sees him and says something like "well now, who is this future serial killer?"
Although hard as he is, he's not a sociopath. He's still protective of the group, mostly of Sophia and his father.

I think Carl is being treated unrealistically. I think his poise and problem solving capacity are a little advanced for his age, and the amount of deference the actual adults are giving to him in RIck's absence would just not be happening. It makes for a "cool" kid, but not very realistic storytelling, IMO.
He might be unrealistic in our world, but considering what he's been through, it's not that strange that he grew up very quickly.
Agreed, having a rather adult ~13 year old isn't
that
unrealistic. If he was the same age as in the comics, I would agree that his role was gratituous. Also, he's the best shot in the group left at the prison. I agree when there's only 4-5 people they should be sticking together, but then remember Rick after Lori died, going on a roaring rampage against the walkers. I think Hershel would rather see Carl take out some pent-up aggression on the zombies than being left to blow up.

Uh, the walking dead game is just so amazing. So sad it's over. Season 2 has to hurry up.
Started playing it today. I'm up to episode 3, so far. You're right, it's pretty amazing.

Tonight's episode was great until the last 30 seconds. The way they are handling Rick's breakdown continues to be one of the stupidest story lines they have ever done. Other than that and the writers continuing to !@#$ all over Andrea's character the story is going great. Really curious to see where the walking Dixons wind up, and the Governor was every bit his intimidating self during that scene with the smoke grenades when he was casually walking through the smoke shooting zombies, looking for Ricks crew.
This season is just awesome, so much better than season two. It's better than season one as well, but since I actually liked season one the change isn't as dramatic.

Anybody notice a possible Breaking Bad reference in season 2? Darel's brother had blue crystal meth. Both shows are on the same network.

They confirmed after the episode that this was a Breaking Bad reference, which I think is awesome. I could totally picture Walt and Jessie killing zombies. I think there were others too, IIRC the guy who played Krazy 8 was in season one, he was threatening to feed Glen to dogs and his character on Breaking Bad had some attack dogs.

Ugh I feel like every time the writers try and deviate from Kirkman's original work it just gets so terrible. What, *!@#ting on Rick and Andrea's characters weren't enough, now they're gonna put some overly forced and awkward hothead personality on Glenn?
Seriously, is anybody still willing to defend Rick while he's being this much of a pussy?
Also DAMN the last 15 minutes of that episode was intense! I love the way they're handling the Governor, this dude is one scary mother^&*!er.

I was so shocked when that happened. I was enjoying a nice little jovial conversation and BAM. %^&* happens

mental %^&*ing disorders
) with being a "pussy"? That mightn't be your intention but it's basically what you're doing, and it's not only offensive as #$%^, but also completely ignorant.

It took me by surprise, even though I was kind of expecting something more subtle to happen. More along the lines of scouting the prison than actually making themselves known, if that makes sense.

So glad somebody took the bait, I've been wanting to go over this with somebody.

Carl should have PTSD since he actually shot his mother in the face after watching his baby sister sliced out of her while she was alive. Andrea saw her sister ripped apart, Carol lived with an abusive husband and saw her reanimated daughter shot in the head. Merle cut off his own hand to escape a group of zombies, it's not mentioned in the show, but Michonne had a son who was eaten alive. Hershelle lost five kids to zombies plus his wife.
I am calling Rick a pussy because he is having a massively over the top breakdown, when the rest of the group needs him, and frankly, what he experienced isn't as bad as what some of the others have, who are handling things better.
He can suffer from PTSD and still not wig out like that, soldiers do it in combat situations all the time. It's not like having a breakdown just flips a switch in somebody brain that makes them go loopy. He's being &*!@ing weak, everybody else in the group is more or less keeping their #$%^ together, he should be too. He had the same break with reality in the comics, and he never let it effect him like this or put everybody in jeopardy.
That mightn't be your intention but it's basically what you're doing, and it's not only offensive as #$%^, but also completely ignorant.
Three things I would like to say about this.
1) Its fictional. Rick is not a real person, so there's nothing offensive about me calling him a pussy. In a real life situation I would never refer to somebody suffering from PTSD like that, but this is a show, its a dramatization. It's the same way that I can like the Governor, when having any sympathy for a person like that in real life would make me a monster.
2) I was literally watching this weeks episode with a friend of time who served in Afghanistan as a combat medic. He has actual experience with some of the stuff you were talking about, and served with a friend who almost had a breakdown from PTSD. And he was the one who pointed out even more vocally than me, that Rick was being a whiney little twat.
3) Don't call me ignorant when you obviously have a very poor understanding of how post traumatic stress disorder works.

Repeat after me, it's just a tv show, it's just a tv show.
Things are rarely if ever as good as the comics.

So... we're not allowed to debate it? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose of having a forum?

What did I say that made it seem like I was getting heated?
I would also like to remind you
GOD DAMN MOTHER ^&*!ING PIECE OF *!@# !@#$%^&ISH ****SUCKING HOLLYWOOD!
UGH! I had such high hopes for that, and they are turning it into another @#$%ing Michael Bay action bull *!@# movie!@#$ %^&* &*!@! UGGGGGH! Hope to hell Max Brooks stops it, or at least makes them change the name, so that piece of $%^& will not be associated with one of the best zombie novels of the decade.....
Major sins: Fast zombies; there are no fast zombies in the Brooks world. Major sins....the rest of that....UGH!
Let he who is without zombie nerd rage, cast the first stone.

Yeah but that was rage was not aimed at anyone on the board.
But really, we get it, you think the current incarnation of Rick on the show is being a pussy.....you've been saying that a few months now, so rather then beating the dead horse even more into the ground, just enjoy the talking pictures as best you can, and hope that the show fixes it at some point. Honestly, that's why I'm just going to wait for the season to be over then watch it all in one go; been losing interest in the TV show lately.

Dude I still don't know what your getting this from, when did I rage at anybody? Maybe I typed a long post, but I didn't cap talk or cuss out or name call him. Really I didn't mean anything to sound harsh. I actually brought it up hoping Patty or somebody else would call me out on it, I was hoping to debate this with somebody.

This is only the second time I've mentioned it...
