It is expensive in some parts of the world.
In venezuela, a single gamecard of wow's 60day gametime, costs about 500.000 Bolivares, and the average salary for someone over here is 1.500.000 bolivares. So right there, goes a third of your monthly income, =/
While you can do a small amount of sacrifices to get yourself a computer (A semi-decent rig costs around 3.500.000 bolivares, a great gaming rig wont be cheaper than 5.000.000) by paying it little by little each month, blowing up 250.000 bolivares per month on a videogame is just not viable.
To give you an idea of how expensive that would be, I pay 130.000 for my electric bill, and 90.000 for my internet service. per month.
Wow costs more than my electric bill, and internet/phone bill put together.
This is why I had to retire from wow about a year ago, till my loyal and generous guildies came to the rescue, and now they help me finance my subscription, since 6 of my best friends in wow pool together 5 bucks each, and use that money to buy a gamecard and then send me the code via email so I can keep playing.
As for how did I even got cataclysm (The game costs 800.000 bolivares) I had to pay someone on my realm almost 20k gold so he could buy cataclysm and pass me the CDkey to upgrade my account (with the disadvantage that I don't have the installation disks, and thus every time I gotta install cataclysm, I have to download 13 Gb of data)
so no, playing wow is not cheap in every country, there are some less-fortunate places where playing videogames is in fact expensive.
I've wanted to join TOR for quite a while but the cost of the game? 900.000 bolivares, and a 60day gamecard? 600.000 Bolivares, for a grand total of 1.500.000 bolivares :P your ENTIRE paycheck of the month. Since I got a family to feed, that's obviously not an option for me.
As it is, I am farming up diligently the gold to buy MoP, because I'm pretty sure the game wont be cheap.
And BTW, if games are so expensive how did I even started playing wow in the first place? because they used to be a lot cheaper, back when there wasn't an anti-videogame law in place, and back when we could exchange our currency to dollars freely.
When I joined wow, I bought vanilla+tbc+wotlk+60 day gamecard for 400.000 bolivares. Today a single 60day card costs more than the 3 games plus my first card put together.

To the people drawing in the homeless, saying it shouldn't be compared to movies or whatever, referring to myself:
...as soon as you are wealthy enough to even think about computer games.
To explain it further, if the OP opened this thread he has access to a computer.
That means he is probably able to afford a computer (wow, what a brillant reasoning! I'm astonished.)*
That means he can likely afford 13€ a month, or someone can afford it for you.
As I said before, he doesn't have to buy all the xPacs at once. (wow, I can cite myself! -- What?
I Can't Hear You Over the Sound of How Awesome I Am
)* **
Also:
OP's question: Is it exepnsive to play WoW.
Poster's summarized answer: Not more that other forms of entertainment.
-------------------------------------------------
* means there's irony.
That's not something you eat
. <= This is irony too. And this too. => Seriously.
I looked'em up.
Here
.
** No, I don't have that achievement.
Except, posting from a computer doesn't mean you OWN a computer. Could be from a free access computer (like a library) or from a net cafe. There are also places/ways to get an extremely cheap computer...but it might not be good enough to play wow (yes such things DO exist). There is definitely a threshold of being "wealthy enough to even consider computer games".

Let's use simple Maths... battle chest $20, expansions $50 each ($80 collector's edition), membership $30 (3 months), special items $20 each, a laptop who complete all of requeriments to play without problems $1200... Equals more than one month of work with a minimun of $7.25 of salary. If you have more of one child who loves to play WOW at the same time, you will need to buy all of those things per child....

Very simple indeed.
Collector's Editions and Store items are totally optional/luxury, so let's scratch them.
You probably already have that computer/laptop for other games or office applications/internet surfing (and WoW has quite decent demands, so it could be a machine that's several years old, without an actual necessity to upgrade)
Yes, the Battle Chest costs 19.99 USD on the Blizzard store, but you can often find it for less in local stores. Mists of Pandaria, the only expansion you need to purchase separately at the moment, is
listed
at 19.99 as well - may be a time-limited offer, but again, these are the bargains you're looking for when aiming to save money.
But all of the above are basically one-time investments, they become quite negligible over the years of playing. Sure, you need to have some money
now
, when you start playing, but you'll still profit from that money years from now.
That leaves us with the monthly subscription, which is of course not as negligible. 10 USD per month. How much is that compared to the money you spend on other games, mobile phone micropayments, nights out? And you can stop paying the subscription every month (or every second/third, depending on how far ahead you paid) and let your WoW account rest, without any drawbacks.
Just don't forget to empty your characters' mailboxes, of course.

The problem is.. Right now WOW upgraded his graphics, to run those graphics without overheating your laptop, you will need a decent Video Card with high performance, the only laptops with those cards are named Gamers laptop and the cost of gamers laptop start on $1200... The point is. You can play WOW with a normal laptop but you will get lag on raids, dungeons and battlegrounds and your laptop can be a victim of a overheat situation.
And sometimes the game demands you to get some special items to get better experience while playing the game.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

Just set your graphics on low. I bought a $700 laptop for school which ran WoW on mid graphics just fine. I never had any lag (which would be an internet problem, not a machine one) and it never had any problems keeping cool.
Also And sometimes the game demands you to get some special items to get better experience while playing the game.
No, no it doesn't. The only non-vanity item/service that you pay actual money for (beyond realm/race changes) is the level 90 boost. You don't need that. You can actually play the game to get there.

Do you will pay a game to play it on half or you will buy it to play it with plenity? Low resolution? The most important part of this game is the detail of everithing, gameplay, characters image, detailed landscapes, spell effects, etc.. You can play on low resolution but you will not enjoy those details ;)

I generally played for 3-4 hours at a time, on medium to high graphics.

Med-high its the same as half... but good.
Everytime when WOW updates they modify the graphics and increase the system requeriments. One day... you will need a new laptop to play it.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

Ok
1: you necroed a 3 year old thread just to add basically nothing good to it?
2: This bit: Let's use simple Maths... battle chest $20, expansions $50 each ($80 collector's edition), membership $30 (3 months), special items $20 each, a laptop who complete all of requeriments to play without problems $1200... Equals more than one month of work with a minimun of $7.25 of salary. If you have more of one child who loves to play WOW at the same time, you will need to buy all of those things per child....
Is completely nonsensical.
Wow is one of the games with the lowest system requirements right now. It runs on antique pieces that should belong into a museum. Also, if you already have a computer to post this, it can run wow, no matter its specs. Collector's Editions are luxury items, you don't need them to play, and finally, all of the previous expansions (minus Mists of Pandaria) were folded into the battlechest which costs 20 USD.
3: The problem is..
This would be a problem if laptops were the only computers in the world. They're not. Regular desktop PCs can run wow without a problem.
And sometimes the game demands you to get some special items to get better experience while playing the game.
No it does not. The only items you can buy with real money are pets (Which serve no purpose other than decorations unless you do the pet-battle minigame. And even then, the game doesn't DEMANDS you to get the paid pets, since there's 500 other pets you can get in the game for free, several of them WAAAAAAAY more powerful than the store pets) and mounts.
And before you even mention the mounts, no, the game doesn't demand you to get a paid mount to get a better experience, there's several hundred free mounts in the game, all of them with the same speed. Much like the pets, its a cosmetic option that is in no way required to enjoy the game or "enhance your experience".
Finally, the last thing you can purchase is the boost to 90, but leveling is quite easy these days, and can be done for free.
Do you will pay a game to play it on half or you will buy it to play it with plenity? Low resolution? The most important part of this game is the detail of everithing, gameplay, characters image, detailed landscapes, spell effects, etc.. You can play on low resolution but you will not enjoy those details ;)
And what exactly does any of that has to do with paying on the game? You can get quite a lot of mileage on this game on even the oldest PCs imaginable. And lag has nothing to do with your PC but with your internet connection.
I must say..... for your first post I think you made a rather poor first impression. (With me anyways)
Everytime when WOW updates they modify the graphics and increase the system requeriments. One day... you will need a new laptop to play it.
again, what's the obsession with the laptops? You can just play it on a desktop PC and be just fine. I played wow for 5 years on a piece of junk PC that was incredibly obsolete and couldn't even run some of the most basic games. And yet wow ran just fine at practically max (I only had 2 options set on medium, the shadows, and the water, everything else was set to maximum)
I only updated my PC because there were other games I wanted to play, but even now, if I still had that old PC, I would still be able to keep playing wow completely fine.

Basic... Laptops are portable and i can play everywere with wifi. I can't put a Desktop on my back pack, if i pay a game why play it only at home? That is why laptops are more useful.
Try high resolution on a old pc... lets see what happens...
Mist of pandaria: original release price was $50 right now they have it on $20 because the new expansion will came and his price is $50
20+20+50=90+10(1month of subscription)=$100 to start to play the game.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##ElhonnaDS##DELIM##

20+20+50=90+10(1month of subscription)=$100 to start to play the game.
lulzwhat? You are misinformed.
Battlechest (Vanilla, BC, LK, Cata, 1 month time included) - $19.99
Total = $19.99 to
start
playing
Mists of Pandaria - 19.99
Total = $39.98 to
continue
playing once you hit level 85
Warlords of Dranor - $49.99
Total = $89.97 to continue playing one the expansion is released in late 2014
After the first month, you will need to pay the monthly subscription fee which is
1 month - $14.99
3 month - $41.97 ($13.99 a month average price)
6 month - $77.94 ($12.99 a month average price)

The first three expansions are bundled in the Battlechest for $20. You don't need Pandaria until 85. So no.
