I know how you feel man. My hunter is currently level 66 and I have the same problem at times with bad tanks. You should have checked some of the mobs and made sure he was Rending before Thunderclapping. A lot of tanks don't understand they need to Rend first so they can spread it to other mobs.
If they pick that talent that is... Some don't and really don't think on keeping aggro on other mobs then one. It really is a huge pain in the ass.
It however means if you level up a low level tank and keep aggro. You'll get praised to death :p

So I just stick to single target dmg of what the tank is attacking... huge loss of dps for me as I'm surv and having to watch my threat
...
Yes i needed to rant and get this off my chest its becoming more and more common as i play this game and people want more and more of a carebear game... its grinding my gears something fearce...
i must compliment you on changing to single-target dps to keep your threat under control. most dps aren't smart enough to have figured that out.
but those bad tanks are
learning
(and doing it before queueing for heroic, which is good). perhaps you could have given the tank more feedback on what abilities are good for spreading threat (be specific and be polite, sent via a tell .... not the "ur threat sux bad tank!" in party chat). remember that some/many of these bad tanks will get better, and they will be shortening your future queue times.

I wound up having an argument with a hunter in a lowbie dungeon earlier. It was SM:Cathedral, and I'm almost beyond the level bracket for it, but I'm running it for the shield (I wantz...). Anyway, I'm just getting back into tanking by trying it out on my original low level paladin, and going at a steady pace, pulling groups of mobs that I know I can handle, and not over-doing it, sometimes chain-pulling if other groups are within range when my current ones are about to die and the healers mana is okay. The hunter basically just starts pulling mobs left right and centre, not off of me but extra ones. My philosophy is generally if you pull it (deliberately), you tank it, so I would just go stand next to him, and watch the mobs beat on him.
Eventually, I got annoyed enough about it to say in party chat and ask him to stop. My view was that I'm the tank, I do the initial pulls, you are dps you kill the baddies. His response was soemthing along the lines of "its not a raid dude, its only SM, go faster", and when I repeated my viewpoint I was told I was a "!@#", and then after we downed Mograine he gave me the whole "I've been playing a Paladin since pre-TBC so take it from me, l2p" and then ran off before I could even open a chat box to type something in reply! Now, is it just me, or is that seriously unnecessary and typical of pugs? The classic "gogogo" mentality of dps in the LFD annoys me sometimes.

The classic "gogogo" mentality of dps in the LFD annoys me sometimes.Comes from tanks and healers too; I've had a fun runs lately where the Tank just keeps pulling in normals and not paying attention to the Healer's mana.....and then the group laughs as he dies horribly and we don't get put into combat.

The problem is that most dungeons below 60 don´t even need a tank. If everyone single target kills something, they will die way before they do any real damage. We can talk about what is right, or that it is necessary for tanks to learn how to tank (so we should go slower), but the reality is, a lot of players just want to level up fast, in fact, the vast majority do.
You are fighting a losing battle if you use the LFD tool and expect the other players to do anything except what is fastest.... like killing all the bosses in a cata heroic, or doing the optional stuff in ZG.. or going slow in a sub 60 dungeon. If you really want to do any of those things, do a guild run or recruit from your own server.
I have leveled up two tanks now since cata launched, and I have given up trying to ´tank´. I charge in, do aoe, but I don´t chase down mobs that I lose aggro on unless they are going to the healer. By the time I get a taunt off, and the mob gets back to me, the dps has it dead anyway. Just keep stuff off the healer and the run will be fine.

I'm just wondering:
Raiding on my tank, I can hold aggro no problem. I can take hits from bosses and no what I'm doing.
But I constantly get yelled at because I only do, like, 4k DPS on average because I'm more focused on my health, aggro, and cooldowns as well as other encounter mechanics.
Is this right? Should I be above 10k as a tank even if my aggro and survivabillity suffers from it?

You should have checked some of the mobs and made sure he was Rending before Thunderclapping. A lot of tanks don't understand they need to Rend first so they can spread it to other mobs.Let's see... charge, rend... and watch the mobs peel off towards the hunters and mages as the thunderclap hits only a single target. A single GCD too many. I sometimes can't blame a 'bad' tank for deliberately leaving the rend out of the opening if it means, at least minimal, threat on all the mobs.I have leveled up two tanks now since cata launched, and I have given up trying to ´tank´. Just keep stuff off the healer and the run will be fine. That's exactly how I was starting to tank, till I just plain decided to give up the tanking role completely.

As was mentioned, early dungeon runs are completly screwed at this point in the game. With some players in full heirloom gear, and working on their 7th alt, and others with miss-matched quest gear that have never seen the place before combined in the same group, you are going to have issues. You either have to deal with it, try to be helpful, or find another group. (or be a d-bag, rage-pull and leave the dungeon)
Tank's fault. The tank has one job - hold aggro. And he wasn't doing it.
You are only 1/2 right. The tanks job is to hold aggro, but the DPS job is to put out as much damage as possible...without jumping aggro on the tank. Im not saying the OP was at fault, as he was doing more than most...looking for the TC, and swapped to single target when AOE was still too much. But as a DPS, you have to know what the limits of your tank are, and do what you can with what you got.

My main is a hunter, but when I roll alts on other servers to putz around and talk to people, I usually make them hunters as well. If my first multi-shot in a dungeon gets me a lot of attention, I dingle target for the rest of the instance. You have to guage what the tank can handle. I'm not saying he was right, or doing a good job, but the aggro responsibility is a 50/50 load, and if the tank can't pull his share, then you have to either drop group or adjust your playstyle.

If you are new to tanking, what would you recommend would be a good class to start tanking with? I find this thread interesting because of what is being said and I have been wanting to start tanking since I do dps. I have noticed that many times im in instances I tend to over dps and just stop to give the tank aggro back but sometimes tanks dont do anything about it. It's a weird mechanic between tanking and dpsing.
