The very best thing you can do if you want a super smooth run (and possibly multiple runs with the same group) is to talk in Party chat. As soon as you get into the group, say Hi, mention you are new to healing if you want, and be polite. People are much less likely to flip out on someone who they've been talking to already.
And try not to speak in generalities. If a tank is a bit of a prick, it's because he needs to deal with bad players all the time. A tank actually needs to know what he's doing, while any DPS can just herpaderp their way through by tab targeting and clicking buttons.

I think you might be over reacting a little bit after having a bad druid tank carianna, but in some respects your right.
I am a tank, and there are times where I think the world revolves around me. Its not always our fault. Tanks start the pulls, they lead the group. Its happened to me a couple of times where I will zone out after about an hour of tanking, and just keep pulling. This one time, I pulled a group, with out even realizing that my healer went back to check on something. I died, group wiped. My first thought was, ! WTF where were my heals, but then I saw that he had typed "brb repairs" and I didn't even see it.
Anyways, all I'm saying is that a tank sets the pace, and sometimes that can absorb the person into thinking they are the most important in every way.
Hope you get better tanks,
Cheers,
Hat

Well maybe it's because if a tank screws up just once they get yelled at until they leave/end while the dps can stand in whatever they feel like...

Having tanked before, I can say this. Being a tank is like being the glue which holds your team together. It's a leadership position, and a more stressful one. Combine the stress with having power over the group, and you often get tanks who will abuse their power. This is just my two copper on the situation.

I've experienced that myself, a lot. Tank leaves, rest of the group has a 20m+ wait for a new tank.
You're not put at the front of the queue, looks like (unlike when someone declines an invite, THAT does put you at the front).
I dunno. Often, when playing on my paladin, and we kick a tank, we get a new one within a few seconds. A group that's already underway should have higher priority over a group that hasn't started yet.

OP, Have you considered that maybe the tank role itself jsut attracts people who already have an attitude?
Personally, as a tank, I have an attitude. And honestly, sometimes I enjoy being an ass to other people. But when people in this game act like they know everything about everything, yet do no perform well, that's when I let my attitude out to play.
