My main is a tank. Usually, I explain fights more specifically if people screw up. But when DPS (and sadly, this happens too much) join in 50%+ PvP gear, refuse to follow even basic mechanics, etc... I just get tired of it. It's very wearisome as a tank sometimes.
Considering that I've solo'd about 1/2 of Venoxis, 1/2 of the D-hawk phase of the Drakarra, etc... When people can't do basic things like avoid the green, slow-moving venom, or get out of the fire... Yeah, I get irritated.
But, it's more of a learn to play the game thing vs position thing, for me. And, I try not to be arrogant; I have high hopes until people screw up.

one reason: tanks know they can get away with it.
They know (or think they know :) ) they won't get kicked no matter how rude they are, simply because it means a long queue for the rest of the team, when they themselves can queue and have a near instant new dungeon.
I quite happily kick tanks out of groups for being a @#$%^&bag. I'll just pop my own board and shield on. Even if I can't, I'll still see if others are willing to das boot prick tanks.

You dual wield shields? Jealous.

Don't group "most" tanks by your few experiences with low level tanks.
Except it isn't just with low level tanks either.
Per the OP... it is.

Regardless, as a tank I'll $%^&* and moan all I want. Be it at 85 or 58.
It's much harder to gear a tank (maybe not these days, but in the past - and still slightly more so) than it is a DPS. We also need to pay attention to more than our action bar and ZZZ. Therefore I reserve the right to be a COMPLETE #$%^&*! to a DPS who isn't up to snuff or a healer who just can't heal properly.

I can put up with a lot from Tanks. I occasionally tank guild runs so our other tanks can give their alts some love, and it has been quite an eye-opener. I literally need a break afterwards because of the stress. I am terrified that I am going to let aggro slip or overpull or generally let the group down. The experience has made me much more sensitive to the needs of tanks, and given me an appreciation for those who tank well.
There are limits, however. I won't tolerate a tank who seems to think that I should be able to pull amazing numbers on recount while simultaneoulsy re-sheeping because some fool of a rogue loves spamming Fan of Knives, decursing everyone, interrupting, spell stealing and keeping my ass out of the fire. Sorry Mr. Meat Shield but sometimes utility takes precedence over Recount-E-Peen-Stroking, and a dead DPS does no DPS.

Lol what?
I got my blood DK to be able to tank Zandalaris about a week after he dinged 85, and could do it with my eyes shut. Hell, my prot paladin friend who tanked FL regularly (not sure if he's started on DW yet) could do all of Firelands easily, without hardly paying attention to anyone.
You seem like you need an attitude adjustment, because if you think, as tank, you're the most important person there, I can tell you right now that you're dead wrong.

Tanking can be stressful, if DPS is low or the healer is undergeared. But for the most part it tends to be far more relaxing for me than playing my healer. Being the tank is no excuse for being an asshat, hands down. A hunter who knows their class can do the same job, albeit slower, with proper pet management.
Being the healer on the other hand...
That's a different story altogether. A good healer can make the difference between an undergeared tank wiping or keeping a DPS alive long enough to finish a boss. No matter what H FL geared asshat tanks think, if the healer is sitting down to drink they will fall down, hard. So, I tend to be more forgiving of female canine behavior from healers, too many time have I had groups wipe because of "invincible" tanks continuing to pull. But tanks seriously need to chill out, even me from time to time... >_>
