T_T
Taken from the newyork times one of the most popular filesharing websites in the world was just taken
down
and this is without SOPA or PIPA being yet aproved.
Mark my words lads and lasses, this is just the beginning .
And for those PENDEJOS who just took down my favorite site to watch tvshows
this
is my honest response.
T_T where am I gonna watch my shows now? none of them are broadcasted on my country, nor sold, nor anything, my only way to see international TV was either on the crappy cable channels we got here (that only broadcast garbage approved by my communist government) or by sites like Megavideo.
R.I.P Megavideo =( we had a good run, and I for one................. /hat-down will miss you.

I never used it. I'm not really aware of what it was all about. If it was into piracy, then it deserved to go down. In my opinion, your anger should be directed at your government.

I personally think the proliferation of piracy is the internet's gift to the world. While I only ever used Megavideo once, the first time watching through Dragonball Z, and even then only when DailyMotion didn't have the episode I wanted, this is a sad day.

I never used the Megavideo side of it but I used Megaupload to share files like Minecraft maps and other sized files with friends.
It's not as much of a loss to me as it is for Rankorr but it's surprising to learn that the FBI has jurisdiction in Hong Kong.

@underlined part:
it was a double-site. One of them was Megaupload, which was a file-sharing website, you upload something, and someone else would download it. Simple as that. It was all legit. The other site was Megavideo, which was like Youtube, but better due to several reasons, the first that they didn't had that lame 10min break on how long videos uploaded could be, nor comment section so people can rant about stupid stuff, and second, because it was less popular than youtube, it was also less monitored, so uploaded TVshows in Megavideo could last quite a while before being taken down. (Unlike youtube where they get taken down within the hour)
@bolded part:
It was not into piracy, in fact, it had strict rules about uploading copyrighted software or videos, and once those were found out, they were taken down. Since it wasn't as popular as youtube, this process was slower, hence giving me time to watch my shows before they were eventually taken down.
@italic part:
it is, but these people aren't making it any easier either, that site was my only way to get decent television. Now its gone, and with it, a large part of my entertainment =(

Wait, is this for 24h or closed forever?
Four of the seven people, including the site’s founder Kim Dotcom, born Kim Schmitz, have been arrested in New Zealand, the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Thursday; the three others remain at large. The seven — who a grand jury indictment calls part of a “Mega Conspiracy” — have been charged with five counts of copyright infringement and conspiracy, the authorities said.
that's from the article I linked, since the site's founder was arrested, I doubt its for 24 hours.
also from the same article:
As part of the crackdown on Megaupload, 20 search warrants were executed in nine countries, including the United States. About $50 million in assets were also seized, as well as a number of servers and 18 domain names, the authorities said.
this is a heavy blow to megaupload, even if they managed to win the dozens of legal battles that are due to start soon, they will probably never rise up again, at best, the major CEO and shareholders could avoid being sent to prison but the site is as good as dead.

Wont really miss Megaupload, if anyone knows anything about 4chan and the old days of /b/ you'll know people have used that site for things to be downloaded that are far worse than just some song or movie.

the same can be said about youtube, facebook, and similar sites.
that doesn't excuse shutting it down entirely. If someone uploads something that is copyrighted, take the copyrighted material down, not the whole damn site.

and your point is?
That's like saying youtube won't be missed because back in '09 /b/ flooded youtube with porn videos and tagged them with what they expected pre-teen and just generally young people would search for

They're in trouble because Megaupload allegedly
profited
from copyrighted material, not merely because they were hosting it. You can't pay people for their piracy nor can you profit from it. I don't understand why this is so hard to understand.

As mentioned by rankkorr copyrighted material would get pulled down if reported, however things got reported slower than they did on youtube, not because less people use it, but because megaupload content wasn't tagged like it is in youtube. Most videos couldn't be found via a search and could only be accessed via a direct url link to the video/uploaded content you want.
So if you wanted to see a new episode of a show you couldn't just type the show's name in the search bar and find it, those videos would get reported quickly and brought down, rather you'd need a direct link to the show/episode you wanted which you could usually find in a blog, some site which uploaded/gave links to said show/episode, in the comments of some site, etc.
However if the video/uploaded software was seen against the ToS and/or reported they would bring it down.
Under
safe harbor
of the
DMCA
megaupload/video shouldn't have been taken down in the first place.
youtube profits off copyrighted content as well, and they are still online because of safe harbor, the biggest difference here, and the reason megavideo is being taken down and not youtube, comes in the form of the search bar

Youtube doesn't pay people who upload copyrighted material.
We'll see how this plays out.
Edit: According to the news reports, Megaupload is alleged to have conspired with the uploaders and
knowingly
profited from this activity. If this allegation is true it makes all of the comparisons to Youtube moot, unless someone wants to claim Youtube
deliberately
made a business off of hosting copyrighted material

If someone asked anyone from YouTube who knew what they were talking about would have to say yes if asked if YouTube contained unauthorised use of copyrighted material, and yet they take profits.
That is completely different from profiting while hosting copyrighted material. Youtube execs don't say "Okay, what can we do to
encourage
people to upload that new movie? (strike 1) Alright, now we can make money off this by allowing people to pay for a faster download of this pirated movie (strike 2). Now how can we make this revenue look legitimate?" (strike 3). This is essentially what Megaupload is being accused of.
