I'm glad to see the featured guides section was updated - what about the tip of the post & interview sections?
Its actually in edit mode right now on a different tab, along with the next interview.
I'm glad to hear it - I just wanted to make sure they weren't forgotten. I think the interview section is interesting to read through, and I'm trying to make sure any tips that get posted about formatting make it into the
Guide Writing for Dummies
guide if they aren't there already.
Just sitting on this conference call, and its really hard to type sentences when I have people screaming into the phone.
Speaking of that....why do people think that phones have just been invented and it requires that they yell as loud as they can? We have really nice phones....in all our world wide offices....there is no need to yell >_<

This tip-o-the-post is going to be a bit less about coding, and more about how to code. Should be good though. Probably have the whole post updated by tomorrow morning.

I don't always write redundantly, but when I do, I like to write redundantly sometimes.

Not to be a pain, but it's been a couple of days since you said that the updates would be live. I imagine you're busy with other things as well, but for reference, is the first post going to be updated on a monthly basis? Bi-weekly? Randomly? It'd help to know how often to check that first post, and on this thread in general.

So, I guess I need to apologize.
I said there would be tons of interest and enough activity to warrant Guide forums. But seeing that this thread is basically dead, I was totally wrong. I guess those couple of us who are really interested in Guides can continue to try and keep this thread going, but it's certainly very disappointing.
Cheers.

I have been slow to update the main page, but motivation is low, seeing as how its reception was less than expected, and it has dropped to the second page twice since its creation. That's why we didn't sticky it right away, we wanted to see how it moved around.
Maybe if we sticky-ed the topic people would see it more. A Guide Forums would definitely have more traffic than a topic, but that's only because it would be listed in the drop down with the other forums. It's over all traffic would still be incredibly low.
As Ashelia has always said, we do have some plans in the works to better integrate guides into the website, but for now, we will just need to wait.
Cheers,
Hat
p.s. @SquireKel delays suck I'm sorry. It will be up when its up? =/(##RESPBREAK##)136##DELIM##hatman555##DELIM##

I understand that there's a symbiotic relationship here between the community and the person controlling updates to the first post, and I recognize the need to see how the thread moves around before deciding whether to sticky it or not.
But it's unfair to put the blame on the community as it seems you've done - if the first post was updated more often or at least more consistently (and even updated all together instead of piecemeal) then people would check the thread more often. Additionally, when it is updated, it doesn't bump the thread - leaving many players believing it hasn't been updated yet. While a "bump - updated first post" comment could get obnoxious, it might be necessary to call attention to it in the first place. Perhaps instead of merely "bumping" the thread with a post like that, a plug for the updates could be inserted. Explain why those guides are featured, maybe a quote from the interview, & a hint toward the tip of the post.
Or, let the spotlight die. With so little interest in the overall community, there's always the "why bother?" attitude to fall back on. The delay in updating the entire first post and not just one section indicates that this thought is taking precedence currently.

I'll put some serious work into this on Thursday afternoon, and then give my ideas to how to make it better and keep it more active.

The way I see it, if people were more interested in it they would post something like "When is this going to get up dated?" or "Who are you going to interview next" or "Wow this is really awesome, can't wait for the next update/interview".
But since there's only 1 or 2 people bothering to comment and look at it, it just isn't that big of a deal. If the community really wanted to see this thing thrive, they would come in and post more. But sadly they aren't.

I think people read guides, I just don't think they're reading a thread about them. We are definitely going to at some point make a guide forum that just pulls all guides--and when it's updated, bumps the guide, etc. But that's probably not until MoP release.

I want to see it thrive but gave up posting because it was lost cause.

This was one of my biggest frustrations and let downs, but hey, what can you do. If you build it, they don't always come.
imho - when threads get too long, I lose interest. Especially if I'm new to a thread, and I'm trying to get into it. I don't want to read tons of pages of a thread to get caught up.
Very true, which gives me an Idea, but really, I'm not even going to sit down and start to make changes until tomorrow afternoon.
Cheers,
Hat

With as active as
Squirekel
is in trying to keep this post updated and current, I'd like to see an interview with her. I think she not only has contributed a ton to the Wowhead community but still has a lot planned in unpublished work.
I'd also like to see interviews with
mcglonec
, I loved his guide on warrior tanking! And finally
hintofbasil
, who based on his own guide and his comments on others very obviously knows his stuff.
So if you're considering who to interview next, please take these three into consideration.

I'll put some serious work into this on Thursday afternoon, and then give my ideas to how to make it better and keep it more active.
...over one week later, still no update. I'm going to stop posting on this thread because it seems like there's no desire or motivation from the
OP
to keep updating it. Much as I'd like to see this thread work, it's incredibly frustrating to repeatedly ask about updates, be told they will be by a certain time or "they'll be up when they're up" - and then be let down when they're not.
People aren't coming back to this thread because the content in it is old - they've already read it, so why return? Update it, and make it clear that there's something new to see, and folks will come back. Yes, not the entire community, but
no
thread has the entire community posting on it.
In any event, best of luck to all the grey users who've posted here - maybe the greens will meet expectations again at some point.

I think that's a massively unfair tantrum of a post to make.
The purpose of this was initially to be a venue for discussion not to lead it. Hat had some cool ideas about some content but this thread was intended to be in lieu of the Guide Forum that was being requested a lot and to provide a place for the guide writing community to talk to each other.
Hat hasn't abandoned this due to laziness, spite or lack of interest but purely a lack of time. We give a lot of our time to this site/community and that time has to come from somewhere. I've personally asked a lot from him recently as I've had a slight shift in my responsibilities which has left a lot of the moderation work on his shoulders.
I also want to say that I do not know what your expectations of "greens" has to do with this thread. Hat posted this is a member of the community not a leader of it. Any one of the posters in this thread could have done the same or could have contributed to the first post but no one did. They could also have used it to discuss guides but that also has not happened.

You guys attack someone who went out of their way to try and do something but got no support from the people for whom he was doing it?
I'm aghast and thoroughly disappointed in both of you.
If you want something then go and make it (or help), don't expect it to be done
for
you. You see Hat struggling to find time to do this and instead of helping create some content you stand back, criticise and blame them for not doing more?
The sense of entitlement is overwhelming.
I thought this was a community and I thought there was a sub-community of smart, helpful people interested in making guides and helping others. Why am I not seeing the community or any of that altruism here?
/sigh

I just hate to see such hostility towards someone who stuck their neck out. There's never been offers of help or contribution just expectations of more and crossed-armed foot-tapping when those expectations weren't met.
I'm sad that the community I thought existed here never existed at all.
