I'm doing a bit of server shopping lately and I was wondering what everyone looks for when they picked their servers.

I make an alt on the server and hop on it during my usual playing time to check Trade to see how many different PUGs there are for old and current content. I also sift through the guild finder, just to get some idea of how many big guilds there are.
I also check the AH, not to see prices really, but to see how many items (especially tradeskill ones) are posted. Lots of items means lots of activity and people.

I'd probably say the major factor for a (subsequent) server are as follows:
1. You have a (real ID) friend on that realm or you plan to level with friends on that realm.
2. The server fulfills your needs (highly progressed, highly PvP competitive/progressed, quality role-playing)
2a. You got into a guild on that server/You are interested in a guild on that server.
2b. The server has the faction "balance" you are looking for.
3. The economy of the server is favorable to you (assuming transfer or you love playing the Auction House).
4. You have few, or no "enemies" on the server (hey, some of those Dungeon Finder people keep a grudge!)
5. Realm transferable heirlooms.
