You have to remember that approx. half the stated subscription number is from their Asian market and they don't pay monthly as EU?NA market does.
They buy pre-paid time..like the phone cards.

You're welcome to find Activision Blizzard's Financial records and review them for yourself. It's a publicly traded company.

Blizzard made over a billion dollars in 2011, reaching a reserve of over 3 billion. However, they only were able to keep 300 million of it. Please note that the amounts listed in the source are in millions. Therefore, any number with 1 comma is in the billions, and any number with decimals is under one million.

300 mill profit is pretty decent, I mean they lost 2 million people.

and the spend nearly 100k a freaking day on server costs...
Server costs could be stopped if they would stop making more servers and actually wait for the low population realms to fill to medium or if they would merge some of the realms.
My realm is a ghost town. Few people are on it and it has only gotten smaller as people xfer off. It isn't because of the expansion is near its end neither, it has always been low population. Even when an expansion just rolls out it will fluctuate between low-medium. One minute it will be low then medium then back to low the next minute.
Heck, people have posted on my realm's site on blizzard's forums begging for a merger with another low population realm, perferably one that would counter our horde number advantage with one that has an alliance numerical advantage to balance the realm out. Blizzard though I guess likes having realms that have only 200 accounts logged on during peak hours.
Also in my opinion 300 million isn't that much in gross income. It is fairly low compared to some of the larger companies out there. The one thing they have going for them is that competition against them is small so they have a good while to milk this cow. They also have some games in the making like 'Titan'. The down side is that those things 'in the making' are usually a re-hash of something old like doom, starcraft, and world of warcraft. These are 'new' games, they are older games. They need to start coming out with something new like 'Titan' or they will eventually die out. Its like a movie the first few versions are good but after awhile it dies out.
