The Profiler is Back Up!! 6/7

Return to board index

Unfortunately today's problems are closely tied to the profiler. It didn't handle a server upgrade we did well, which is pretty disappointing! Our devs spent several hours narrowing down the issue and finally found it was the profiler which was making cached and non-cached searches very slow on Wowhead for items, NPCs, and so on.
So, disappointingly, we've disabled it and will have to keep it disabled throughout the holiday weekend. We tried to get it done, but as it's 6PM PST here and even later EST where some of our devs lurk, I had to cut 'em loose to enjoy their three days off for Memorial Day.
Apologies and thanks for your patience :)
*** EDIT: SpiffyJr is currently tweaking the database inbetween working on some other projects, we hope this will drastically reduce the load.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Ashelia##DELIM##

What? No no, Ashe...give them a good solid speech on how they are the goblins and dwarves of the community, and how they actually
enjoy
doing work. Really you're doing
them
a disservice by forcing them to spend time away from their ever-enjoyable work and go spend time in *shudder* the real world. :-P

I won't lie Spiff, I tried. But I failed. I kept thinking Warcraft II. But could only find 2/3 of the sound clips. The third is in WoW itself. But as far as all three clips in one game, I couldn't find it. And google failed me. :-P

They're from the peons and peasants in Warcraft III. Seems I butchered the quotes a bit:
"Work, work." (peon, sounds like Twerk Twerk though)
"As you wish." (peasant)
"Yes, m'lord." (peasant)

Seems status quo for the profiler.

I updated the ETA. We are trying to work on a solution, but the profiler at this time seems to be the consistent issue in nearly all of Wowhead's downtime. Almost every time someone experiences lag, the profiler is involved, due to its database queries and other loads it gets.
Unfortunately it was just coded differently than most of the site. Since we really don't want to have to take it down completely, we're trying to work out solutions or see how much it would take to actually redo it.

Thanks for the update, Ashelia. Looking forward to seeing it work again (especially since my Priest is in the midst of Loremaster)!

I hope the "take it down completely" solution isn't even considered as an option as this is the only reason I come (almost) daily here.
Thanks for your work!

Give the profiler its own site linked from wowhead of course, being completely separate might negate any problems caused by it here.

The trouble is that I think the thing that people use the most with the Profiler (and the thing they can't get elsewhere) is the connection to the database. Finding quests you haven't completed, pets and mounts you still need, finding upgrades to gear pieces and so on.

We did indeed move the profiler to its own server. It's as Asakawa said; the profiler still needs to talk to the database and that's where it breaks the site. We thought we'd "won" by moving it to its own server, but it just found another way to break the site and require more maintenance :P
Another issue that weighs heavily on us is that the profiler really is decreasing in traffic significantly. It was already down to a couple of thousand uniques per month--that's like .01% of Wowhead's actual traffic. It's frustrating because I don't want to take away something even one person finds to be a godsend, but I also have to think of the site as a whole, so every time the profiler breaks I'm forced to analyze its existence heavily.
What do you guys mostly use the profiler for?

I used the profiler heavily when I was working on Loremaster for my main (both the pre- & post-Cata versions).
Now I use the profiler to track companions, mounts, archaeology projects, and of course achievements. I do still use it for quests, though less often now as I'm just looking for completion rather than grinding for achievements. I generally use it as a springboard to find what I'm missing and then jump to the item / quest page so I can see how to complete things.

I dont really use it very often though when I have it has impressed me, specifically the find upgrades feature for when I play build the best theoretical class X in the time of Y. For example a warrior at the end of TBC before Wrath launch using only available gear gems and enchants from that time. Its a good test of memory and some fun debating with friends on the merits of min maxing.
Maybe you could just give the profiler its own copy of the database to talk to.
