I use the profiler, and I find it a very useful tool. There is no other website that I'm aware of, that roles all the information about a character the way that the profiler does, however, if you feel the need to do away with it, I would understand.

I'd say I mostly use it for the quest filtering, and I have a hunch that at least the Wowhead regulars use it in a similar way - it may help to mirror that data, for users' characters only, only synced when the character is updated from the Armory (less cross-requests)
Or in general, everything related to the Profiler that is not directly used by the Profiler could profit from caching.
While you're at it, it would be great to be able to switch to the quest data from another character more intuitively than changing your "main" in your profile.

What do you guys mostly use the profiler for?
I dont really use it very often though when I have it has impressed me, specifically the find upgrades feature for when I play build the best theoretical class X in the time of Y. For example a warrior at the end of TBC before Wrath launch using only available gear gems and enchants from that time. Its a good test of memory and some fun debating with friends on the merits of min maxing.
Maybe you could just give the profiler its own copy of the database to talk to.
Unfortunately that's really unrealistic and can't be done. The maintenance on that would be really high and it would require a lot of attention to set up as well as keep working. :(
It's already taking up a lot of resources considering its traffic (it has about ~2k users a month nowadays, which is indeed a minority of a minority of a minority unfortunately--the thing that sucks is this minority is very vocal and pleasant to Wowhead). Honestly, if its users weren't such a nice bunch, I would have shut the project down quite a while ago because it has never been beneficial to Wowhead. I think in general there isn't a large demand for tools like the profiler.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Ashelia##DELIM##

Personally i only really use it to make transmog sets (which i spend a lot of time on :p)
I wonder if anyone knows of something similiar that i could use thats the same or as good as the one you guys have?

I use it a lot to plan out transmogrification sets. Easy to change pieces around, can see the difference right away, and 3D view within easy reach.
I've also used it to help me figure out what tanking gear to pursue to keep near the CTC goal. And to keep talent builds handy.

I use it to find recipes that I am missing to then work on completing for the profession.
I have used it to start thinking about some mog sets, but not heavy use there yet.
I have used it to find upgrades some, but now mostly do that over on Mr Robot.

I use it to track quests (so helpful doing Loremaster) and archaeology, find which tradeskill recipes I don't have, plan talent trees, fiddle around with gear upgrades, and to see which mounts, pets and achievements I don't have.

oh good lord, please dont take it away, i use it almost every day. it is so handy for heaps of different things, other mods and apps just dont work as well. if you're down on uses then maybe you need to offer bigger incentives to use it for a while.
I am currently using it to track my quests but have used almost every single function of it since i found.
please for the love of god dont take it away!
We've proven time and time again that we're dedicated to trying to keep it up--right now we have a few theorycrafting sessions under our belt and we think we have an idea to make it use a lot less data that SpiffyJr can set up.
This will be something he's working on today until next week. :)

The decrease in use may be because it's not available so much of the time. It seems half the time I try to use it, it's down for maintenance. From what I remember of it, I used it 1) for loremaster (see what quest(s) I may have missed), 2) as a comparison tool with other same level toons for armor/weapon sets, 3) checking my enchants, talents, etc.

I wont cry, rant or scream. I USED the profiler for all those things previously stated. I no longer use it because of the 2-3 week downtime every other month. I come to wowhead nearly every day. No, I don't have 50k rep, no I don't have 50k posts. But wowhead is important to me. Flame away.
Please don't post things like "flame away." No one here is out to flame you, it's a feedback forum :) Reputation and post counts are meaningless here as well--and should frankly be meaningless everywhere else, they definitely don't get special privileges or rights to attack people or have their opinion mean more.
The profiler has been down for about three weeks in the past year of time. So saying 2-3 week downtime every other month is a little bit of an exagerration, but I do get your frustration since I'm not happy it's not only taken itself down but Wowhead down with it every time (which is why we often have to disable it).
I have SpiffyJr looking into a way to make it run more efficiently. If we can't bring it up with stability this time--since a new server did not help, it's obviously our code in general--we will not bring it up at all. So downtime like this will be over, one way or the other. However, I am definitely leaning towards Spiffy saving the day, as he had some excellent ideas for how to make it use a lot less of our database and a lot less processes. :)
Unfortunately this does set back our guide revamp a little bit, as that was his next project, but I'd much rather try to resolve the profiler once and for all than keep it disabled for the weeks the guide revamp would have taken. Hopefully you guys understand.(##RESPBREAK##)2##DELIM##Ashelia##DELIM##

/cry NOOOOOOOOO
Admittedly, the profiler is a more prominent part of the site and has been around significantly longer. So while I mourn for the guide revamp, I understand the priority differences.

What do you guys mostly use the profiler for?
I use it to track how many and which quests I have done for a particular zone and which quests I have left to do. This is the primary reason, as Blizzard doesn't provide any way of doing this easily.

Which database do you use? It should be easy enough to set up replication on a subset of tables on MS SQL.

I was sent to use the profiler by WoW GMs and I get here and I cannot use it. *cries a little* I am looking forward to using it when it comes back. I want to use it to be able to finish a couple of achievements that require quests and I have been unable to find the quests. So please do not take it away.

I must add myself to the list of people that use wowhead almost only for the profiler. Please don't shut it down.
I suggest to take the data from the wowhead client instead of sync repeatedly (and often without changes) with the armory (the sync with the armory can be manual).
Also I think that the checkbox "exclude item from Pandaria" must be checked by default, because now it requires two query when searching upgrades from the database (the first and a second query with the checkbox checked).
