I've bounced around on a lot of servers, starting over as I needed to.

The temptation would always be there. Deleted toons? Request restoration. Shut off your account? Turn it back on. Nothings ever truly
gone.
Except gold... when you spend it, you're broke. And that sucks. :P

Just completely starting again? Simply wiping the slate clean buy setting up a new account so you have no gold, no mains nothing, just starting free with only the experience in your head?
That way you're not tempted to go back to high level chars
I was thinking that, if I did I'd go with mining/skinning and not worry about crafting profs. Not sure what class I'd pick though.. have to think
I sort of did this. The experience was certainly...interesting although having the knowledge does seem to speed the process of gameplay up anyways.
On the other hand, it's extremely rewarding to apply that skill to low level PvP. The results are devastating. Because I resurrected an account to essentially do just that, I may end up making new characters on other servers for the purposes of doing some twinking mayhem (and to save money). I'd definitely try to use a class with numerous roles, such as a Paladin or a Druid, with gathering professions as you mentioned if I wanted to "start all over again" so I can reach my goal of twinking (on a Hunter) faster.

I'm going to be playing Mists of Pandaria, with a "clean slate", as you put it; however, I didn't want to start a new account. Instead, I deleted all of my characters. No heirlooms, no gold, etc.
Why even do that? Why destroy all the effort and work? I don't see any reason to ever do that.
Simply make a new character on a new server and ignore the old ones or something, just deleting them feels as if you've tossed away the only thing you really have to show for the hours of your life consumed by the game.

Because I know it's a game, and I don't let it consume my life. I wanted to start anew, and I felt the best way was to delete everything, as if I never played before. This applies to every game I play, of course.
Other games might have limited save slots (though in this day and age, only console games and ports should have that) so you could always just start a new character (save slot, profile) while "ignoring" the previous ones (e.g. as mentioned, on a new server)
Just deleting your old characters undoes every hour levelling them consumed anyway, and in the event that you ever wish to play them again, you will wish to bite yourself in the ass for that. It's like throwing away clothes because you don't want to wear them right now. And unlike clothes or other physical goods, game characters don't require physical storage, so you can keep them indefinitely.

That is what I chose to do, why would that concern anyone?Of course, but you also shared this with us on this thread, so please excuse my thoughts :) It just feels so radical to delete instead of just moving (the characters/data or your focus) elsewhere, ignoring the old characters, which is a very easy thing to do with digital stuff. If you can live with that decision and never regret it, good for you :)

I used to raid with someone named Dogfart- I wonder if there is more than one of you.

I'm not sure I make the connection between deleting the characters and the work put into them, or not deleting them, indicating how much the game consumes your life... I mean, that's a personal opinion as to how much of your life goes into the game but simply deleting a character doesn't mean it didn't consume a great deal of your time, or life, before you deleted it and since you plan to make more toons when MoP is released it seems kind of irrelevant to me anyhow.
To each their own. I was just confused as to why you felt the need to delete if you intended to play again at all (or even if you hadn't planned to play again, I still wouldn't have deleted).
Either way, good luck with your future endeavors with WoW :)

Now a days it's not worth deleting the toons; what with the account wide mechanics about to go in, if you delete a toon, you won't have access to the pets and mounts there.

Well if that is his intention to start completely fresh without having to buy a new game and such then I understand it for avoiding the account wide mounts and pets...

Sometimes I think about it, but in the context of the Godfather. Michael Corleone joined the Marines, so he would be away from his father's influence; so if I made a new character on a different server it would be to escape my main's influence o_o.
