So I have recently purchased a venerable mass of McGowan and I'm about to purchase another. However I was told that you can't dual wield these anymore... Can anyone confirm this before I possibly spend my JP?

I'm not sure. I wonder if you can still buy it, try to equip it, then sell it back if it doesn't work for your JP back?

I am currently dual wielding Venerable Mass of McGowan on my Enhancement Shaman. So yes you still can. So buy the second one, they make leveling fun

Venerable Mass of McGowan
If it said "Main Hand", "Unique", or "Unique-Equipped", then you wouldn't be able to dual-wield it. Same applies for any weapon (unless you're a Warrior).

Actually that rule also applies to warriors.

Actually that rule also applies to warriors.Technically, a warrior with Titan's Grip can dual-wield two 1H Main Hand weapons (and I think even shields) though it of course has no actual benefit.

All shields are classified as Off-Hand, so you wouldn't be able to dual-wield them.

proof for two main-hand weapons equipped
;)
