It's been a while since I redownloaded WoW, but I vaguely recall the battle.net install being much faster than when I installed it via the CD's. This probably depends on your computer and internet though, so if you have bad internet, you might be better off using the CD's.

It's probably a lot faster via battle.net because it downloads the important files first then the less needed ones, allowing you to play sooner. You'll still be downloading the rest as your play, though, so you might see some choppiness in gameplay.
When I got this computer brand new, the first thing I did was install WoW on it via battle.net. I started the download, took a shower, came back in 20 minutes, and I could already start playing. It was nuts. I'd suggest going with the online download.

The downloader is for 4.0, but it will immediately install current files, instead of installing 4.0 first and then patching.

I just reinstalled on a new computer and used the dvds. I have the Battlechest and the other expansion dvds. I installed the first dvd then when I put in the second dvd it downloaded the game files and my game was ready to play patched and up to date after maybe 6-7gb download. I didn't need the Cata or LK discs at all and the BC disc (disc 2 of the Battlechest) started the download process. I could have started playing sooner but I'm a stickler for having something finish before I try to start it up.

Yeah even the Classic client downloads the Cata Launcher when being told so by the update server.
