Isn't wow also f2p?
well they sort of have a f2p part. its a f2p trial account that works till lvl 20 and has quite some restrictions.
but if you want the rest you got to pay.
Isn't wow also f2p?Um no; since you pay a monthly sub fee....
This sounds exactly like what SWToR has done. It's f2p up to a certain point, and then you have to sub to get the rest.
Not even remotely the same.
Wow's Trial: Free to play as long as its trial.
Restrictions:
Can't make a Dk, or a monk.
Can't make a worgen or goblin, or pandaren.
Cant' level past 20. (level cap is 85, soon 90, this means roughly 90% of the game is barred for you, including most instances, zones, battlegrounds, all raids, and all arenas)
Can't invite or be invited by others to party
Can't invite, or be invited to guilds.
Can't post anything on the auction house.
Can't send or receive any ingame mail.
Can't trade or receive trades from anyone.
Your gold can't get past 10.
can't invite anyone in RealID.
can't use the public channels at all (Including general, trade, shout, or defense, you can only use the normal channel, and can only whisper to players who whisper you first)
As you can see, this is VERY restrictive.
Compare to SWTOR's Free to play model:
You can level up to 50 (current cap is 50, this means you can do all instances, all battlegrounds, and there are no arenas)
Can't do raids.
There is a weekly limit on how many heroic instances/battlegrounds/space missions you can do.
You can use the auction house, but just like the above, limited (they haven't elaborated how, its either gonna be something like "can only post 2 items at a time" or "Can only buy/sell 50 articles per week")
There will be limitations on what races to choose when making your character, and what customizations to pick.
When there is a queue to log in, paid customers will have priority over free customers.
That's it. There are no more differences between paid customers and freebies. All classes available, all races available, all zones available, all instances and battlegrounds available, ect ect.
As you can see, its not even remotely the same. Wow's free mode is little more than a demo, whereas SWTOR's free mode is almost the same as the full mode, in fact if you don't care for raiding, and only are in it for the story, then it wont make any difference at all.
Bear in mind that SWTOR isn't going 100% free. To create an account you still need to buy the game, though the game's cost is now 15$.
So while in wow's free mode, you can't do almost anything at all, on SWTOR's free mode, you can do almost everything but raids (just limited times per week)
And when the game officially goes free (I think its gonna be november, but don't quote me on that) you can still pay for a subscription if you want to do raids, unlimited battlegrounds/instances per week, and full unrestricted access to the auction house. Plus paying customers will gain access to a currency called "Cartel Coins" used to buy cosmetic stuff like pets or mounts or other mini-perks.

How interesting, rank. The fact that WoW's starter edition is essentially a demo is the reason I was pushing suggestions to lift some restrictions.

Some of the restrictions are plain absurd.
if you can't send or receive mail, can't send or accept trades, and can't post or buy from the AH then WHY IN HEAVENS NAME IS THERE A 10 GOLD CAP? It serves ZERO purpose whatsoever.
I get that its a "Trial" but come on..........
Worst part is that blizzard advertises it as "Free to play" (and then in very tiny small words) "Till level 20"
this isn't free to play, this is a demo with unlimited duration and its not really representative of how the actual game is if just about every way to interact with the community (parties, guilds, whispers, friend requests, chat channels ect) are barred from you.

I doubt its gonna sink.
For the simple reason that the people who played GW1 will play GW2. And GW1 had enough of a playerbase to stay afloat for over 5+ years with no problem. I guess not having a sub fee makes GW feel like a more casual game that you can come and go as you please.
I still don't think GW (or any other MMO for that matter) is gonna take out wow. Established brands don't just go away. Just because I make a new brand of cereal that is just awesome and with a better price doesn't mean I'm gonna make Kellogs go out of business. Kellogs is here to stay unless they sink themselves with bad management decisions, same deal with Wow.
wow is here to stay, and no matter what new shiny game gets released, it wont just suddenly make wow disapear overnight.

I hear these arguments about every other MMO that comes out. Mark my words, after a few months people are gonna be playing it for the pvp and nothing els. Gonna basically be Call of Duty with swords and magic.

seeing as that was not the case with GW1, I highly doubt its gonna be the case for GW2. Again, players of the first game will migrate for the second. Thus making the second highly populated.

Heh we'll see. But I heard that same thing about SWTOR. Star Wars has a larger fanbase, theyll all migrate to SWTOR, etc etc. Nothing changes, its going to wind up in the same hole as all the others.

again, this isn't the same case, because while SWTOR was based on a famous franchise, it was still a new game. GW2 isn't a new game, its a sequel, which means it already has an established playerbase from GW1. A playerbase that is by no means small, I should add.
So while I still think GW2 isn't gonna harm wow in any way, I also don't think its gonna sink either, because this isn't some new franchise trying to make it, this is an already established franchise with enough fans to keep it alive.
So far other than wow, the other MMO Franchise I've seen with a playerbase as dedicated (as to have extremely long wikias and databases) is GW.
I'd understand your point of view if this was a new game like Secret World, or Tera, but GW2 is a sequel, big difference. And again it bears mention: GW1 is no small fish.

I really would love if wow had the pvp system of Lineage 2 (Castle Sieges, Territory wars, Clan Wars, Olympic Gladiatorial Games, Fortress sieges, and Clan Hall wars, yep this game has enough pvp activities to drive you mad, its a shame its leveling system, quests, and crafting system SUCK that bad, or this bad boy would be what wow can only dream to be in terms of pvp)

Idk we will have to wait till its out. But I have this conversation with somebody every single time some new MMO is coming out. "Oh no, this one will last because of *Insert reason here*" in this case being that its a sequel to a formerly popular game.
Ill say this, the one thing that could prevent GW2 from going belly up is that they wont be charging people a monthly fee for playing. Thats the reason games like SWTOR dont last, wow is already so established so nobody wants to pay for that, and another game at the same time. All these games are fun for the first few months, but they fall short in the end.

not all do. Rift is still going strong.
And as you said, since GW2 does not has any sub fees it has a much stronger chance to have people playing it.
There's several factors why the game has the odds rigged in its favor. First one is the large number of fans of the first game, which will inevitably play it, much like a large portion of wow's first players were fans of Warcraft 3, and why most players of Diablo 3 were fans of Diablo 2. Second reason is that it doesn't have a sub fee, so people mostly see it as nothing to lose, just buy once, play whenever you want.
The third one would be those dynamic events, though i'll admit the coin is still up in the air about those, it sounds too good to be true, we'll see if they are as good as they sound.

I played and liked it. Leveling in SWToR was fun, if you liked KoToR and such. Then I got 50 and done the - totally buggy - raids and that was all. No real "end content". Sadly.

The pvp is also more balanced on an individual basis than wows. With wow the balance goes on kind of a rock paper scissors system, like A can beat B but loses to C, which loses to B. Its kind of Blizzard embracing its RTS roots, it makes BGs and arenas balanced, but individual pvp falls short. GW2 on the other hand has a more balanced individual pvp, its based on more reactionary skill than strategy.
I dont have much faith in the pve system though. I get that going outside the whole Tank, Heal, DPS system is a breath of fresh air to some people, but IMO these systems are in place because they work, so Im not so sure how well GW2s is going to go long term.
Also while I like the faction based system in wow, Im glad GW2 wont use that. Especially after it became such a big problem in SWTOR where waaay too many people went Sith and so many servers were unbalanced.

They're not trying to beat wow, they're just trying to be their own good game.
Thats not really how the game market works. I mean Halo and Battlefield might not be trying to "beat" Call of Duty, but they still compete for the same market. Same with GW2, it might be to a lesser extent as other MMOs since it wont be charging a monthly fee, but MMOs suck up a lot of time, and one usually winds up dominating the market. And thats World of Warcraft.
Jeez Ive literally had this same exact conversation with people about Conan, Aeion, Rift, and SWTOR. Every time somebody
swears
that something is gonna make this new game different, but it never does. Whats really sad is when Elder Scrolls online comes out, Im gonna be one of those poor bastards swearing to everybody that its going to dethrone wow...

what most people mean is GW2 isnt calling itself a wow killer and not trying to make any comparisons. It isnt aiming high and doesnt have to.
i havve been highly doubtful of most mmo's except for GW2. I hope it does well.

and also i absolutely raged when a certain game review website gave Secret world a 60/100 score when they gave swotr an 80-something score.
Secret world is much more superior to swotr in story and gameplay. and whathaveyou.
