I've started playing WoW on an EU server - as I was living in France at the time. But I recently moved to Asia, I still kept playing as I didn't feel like buying another license for an US account.
There's about 9-10,000 km between my location and the physical server and the usual latency is around 400ms for WoW.
Not exactly what you are asking but just to give an example as UK-US distance is roughly the same as France-Asia distance. (Very roughly :p)

While I personally play on the EU servers, I got a couple of friends who play on US servers and live in the UK so it is possible. If you have the US version of WoW/expansions then you are good to go! Just make sure if you had an EU client installation before that your current realmlist.wtf points to the US servers.
You can enter make up data, just make sure you enter your real name, surname and date of birth just in case you need to contact Blizzard for account recovery. For address, telephone you can use anything you want! I can recall for my US Xbox Live and PSN accounts I used Microsoft US address.
I don't think it will be a problem of latency/lag, but of timezone difference. Due to that raid times and server peak hours will be different than EU. Try to pick an east coast realm, as it will be closer to UK timezone.(##RESPBREAK##)136##DELIM##hatman555##DELIM##Moved over from a deleted double post.

This is good to know. I have a friend who lives in the UK and we can't real ID each other because she plays on EU servers. She wasn't sure if she was able to play on a US server, but this thread answered those questions :)
