(non) Combat Pets - Learning multiples?

I didn't play beta and I haven't seen anything on this anywhere.

I noticed that in my new pet spell book that I have doubles of some pets, due to having them on different toons. I also learned another one last night that I won out of my Satchel for tanking, because it said I didn't know it yet. But I checked and now I have two.

What's the purpose of having two or more of the same pet?

Well, you could level them separately if you wanted, in case one faints, or whatever they do.

I think the general purpose of allowing pet multiples is that, when you are trapping them in the wild, pets have different grades, and you can capture a second one that might be a better quality than your current version of that pet, without giving up your original if it turns out to be the same quality or worse. Otherwise, you couldn't have a pet Mini Clefthoof, or whatever, and still farm a better quality one.

For the vendor pets, I don't think that comes into play, but they probably allow you to have them just because it's on the same system. I plan on caging and selling any multiples it lets me.

Well that makes sense. I didnt even bother to check to see how many I have active in total, but probably not far from 160 since my main is my only collector I had. Thanks gang!

There's also a bug right now; technically you are only suppose to have up to 3 of a kind that isn't unique, and the pet number is suppose to cap out at 500...but due to the bug, the actual cap is 1500; I have 762 pets on my toons right now, with multiples of vendor bought pets at 9 or more heh.

That's not a bug. They intended during this migration to MoP to allow you to go over the 500 cap.

Edit: Unless you were referring to the 'more than 3 of a kind' part of your post but I don't believe that's a bug either right now during the migration. If you have more than one of a unique pet then that could presumably be a bug.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##sas148##DELIM##

What's weird is that they say the Argent Squire won't be account wide, but on my account I had 2 visible on my main since I had two characters who had one. I deleted one, since it wasn't tradable and I didn't need two. I hope that doesn't come back to bite me.

Having multiples of pets is a bug; it's suppose to cap out at 3 but I've got nine of certain pets. Once the migration is over, it's going to be pared down to 3 again. So it is a bit of a bug.

Actually both things are WAI.. It is kinda like the VP/JP issue, they originally made a post stating 500 cap and 3 per pet... but then a few days later they said the cap would be much higher ( I think 1500) and that there would be no limit on pets. At a future, unannounced date, they said they will start to enforce the 500 and 3 limits.

My guess is this is a resource issue.. they did not want to bombard people´s mailboxes with hundreds of pets at the same moment they were crashing us with the new achievements.

I was wondering why the unlearned pets in my bag didn't have the red "Already known" text on them last night. I almost right clicked the proto-drake whelp I had meant to put on auction, very glad I did not. I can't imagine the purpose of having two of those or two of any pet, really, except like ElhonnaDS said about the wild ones and trying to catch a better quality without risk of being stuck with a worse one.

If you have two of them, you can train one to 25, crate it, and sell it on the AH for a crapload of gold, then level the other one.

I really can´t predict how the AH will play out with battlepets.. but there is the potential that people can make a lot of money by leveling a pet from 1 to 25, then selling it on the AH.

I don't understand how it's a bug? From what I understand it's intended to be above the caps at this time. They will at a later time reduce them down to 3/per and 500/max.

Having more than one of a unique pet though I would agree is a mistake but perhaps that is also suspended at this time until they enforce the caps.
