If you can get more than the vendor price to sell it on the Auction House (and someone actually buys it) then the Auction house is better. However, if you can't get much more than the vendor price, don't want to worry about posting it and paying any fees, then vendor is just more convenient.(##RESPBREAK##)8##DELIM##sas148##DELIM##

For me personally, I sell anything green and under to a vendor (or disenchant it). Blue items I usually check the AH real quick to see if it's worth it, and Epic items always go on the AH.
If you really want to get as much gold as possible though, you'll want to check the AH for every item as sas148 mentioned, if 20G more or less doesn't matter to you you're better off just vendoring greens by default.

It varies greatly based on the item, but as a general set of guidelines:
Crafting mats- Should pretty much always be auctioned. People always need them, and generally will pay quite a mark-up from what a vendor will pay. This is especially true for enchanting mats, low level ore and gems, leather and all levels of cloth. Don't forget cooking mats, either- some are worth a bit if they're the easiest recipe to get you leveled past a certain skill level. The only ones I can think of that aren't worth posting are some of the mats from previous expansions end-game recipes, which no one gets the patterns for while leveling- generally BC level epic and rare quality gems are vendor trash, the "orbs" that drop off of BC 5-man bosses, etc. Those tend to have low buyouts, and high deposits. But to really get a feel for it you should keep checking the AH.
Green Gear- First check the appearance- if it's really nice looking, or unique, you can probably get a higher price for it than you'd think, and it should be posted as is. If not, get someone to disenchant it if you can- those mats sell well, and high, and have negligible posting costs. To check a piece for transmog, other than capes or weapons, you're probably better off checking it on a female toon. Many pieces that sell really well look nondescript on male toons because they don't have the Plate-bikini effect.
Blue Gear- You should also be checking the appearance of these, and sell high if it would be nice for transmog. Even for non-transmog blues, always post tot he AH, unless the stats are stupid. They may not sell for more than 35-45 gold (I find that BC and Wrath ones sell for less than Vanilla ones), but that's more than a vendor. Don't price gouge on these too much, though, because posting costs can be significant and so you don't want them up for a long time. If it has a dumb combination of stats (Agility plate, or something) then check the shards for that level- some sell decently, some sell for nothing, depending on how needed they are to level.
Purple Gear- Always post. And for vanilla epics, ESPECIALLY the ones with nice models, always post high.
Glyphs- Always post.
Cut gems- Always post red gems from Wrath or Cata, regardless of quality, if they have Agil, Str, Int on them (because Wrath ones have no level requirement, though, BC ones are worthless.) For all the other colors, green quality gems that are cut will probably be useless, unless it's the beginning of an expac and they are the current content's gems. For rare and epic quality gems, the current end-game level sell well on the AH most of the way through the expac (though towards the end, some of the rares will drop enough in price that it's better to vendor them). For wrath rare and epic gems, you might get some money for the reds, and maybe the blue stamina cut, but most people just use them for leveling and won't worry about other stats while doing it. BC rare and epic quality cut gems are worthless- vendor.
Pets- Always sell at auction.
Reputation grinding items- Always sell at auction.
Recipes/Patterns- Always sell at auction.
Items that start quests- Always sell at auction.
Anything grey quality (non-gear)- Always vendor
White and Grey quality Gear- Almost always vendor. The exceptions would be that most people don't get shoulders or a helm until 20-25, so even white quality or grey quality items that fill these slots at the level 15-25 range, and provide some armor value are better than nothing, and you could probably get more at auction than from a vendor. Bank alts will also often look for attractive items that can be worn by a level 1, and some of these are grey or white but will sell at auction for that purpose. Generally holiday clothes, fancy dresses made by tailors, level 1 grey necklaces from ZF, "pimp" hats, etc. will sell.
Anything I didn't list- check the AH. Just as a general rule of thumb look at how much it costs to post and how much you could get for it. If you're not getting 3-4 times the deposit at minimum, you'll probably lose money on it on the AH.

Dont just vendor of random drop greens while levelling in vanilla world+ Outlands. Those can be worth a ton of gold for transmog! (it is reasonably safe to do that in wotlk and cata zones though.)
Usually armor items with a certain look will sell. Its best to befriend someone with a female toon (unless your own toon is female) why? because some items looks different depending on gender!
Link the item to your buddy, ask them to "equip" it. then ask them "Does this look skimpy?" If the answer to that question is "yes" then the item will auction for like 50Gold+. if the answer is "No" you can just vendor it.

can all depend on your server economy. back in wrath i would constantly buy stacks of saronite ore for 15-20 gold from the auction house. it sells to a vendor for 25. it may seem like a waste, but i made a lot of gold in the long run.

For a while, I had a policy of putting all my greens on the AH. Despite offering them for default AH prices (vendor +50%, isn't it?), I was quickly stockpiling them far faster than I could sell them, and even when they sold, they did so for well under the cost of relisting them a dozen times.
Greens are vendor trash or disenchant fodder.

I would generally do it like this:
Grey
- Vendor it.
White
- If you gathered the item through a profession, auction it. If it is cloth that you don't need, auction it. Before vendoring most other items, check the auction house price of it, then vendor it (if the asking price of other sellers is less than double or triple the vendor price) or auction it.
Green
- I would try to disenchant it if possible, but otherwise, use the same method as above for white items.
Blue+
- Auction it, pretty much.

Okay, now here's the problem with what you just wrote:
There is absolutely no way, none at all, of knowing what will sell and what won't. Ebay has a "completed listings" option. The WoW AH doesn't. Will this Imbued Disciple's Sash sell? If so, at what price? I have no idea. Someone else might be selling it for 20g, but that doesn't mean that anyone is going to buy it for 20g. What about a Soldier's Gloves of the Monkey? I NEVER see those on the AH. What should I do if I find one?
So really, unless you want to spend half of the day in Trade chat asking people what items they're willing to pay for, it's put them all up or dispose of them. Putting them all up means a net loss.
