I must have missed the expansion pack from 3 months ago. I went right from Cata to MoP.
On a serious note, I was a little sad I missed a couple of days of Brewfest boss because I hadn't hit 89 yet, but I ended up getting everything I needed well before it was over. I think at this point (Hallow's End), there are very few people who haven't hit 89 on at least their main (unless they didn't buy MoP), and since the mounts and pets (which tend to be the most coveted of the items) are account wide now, you really only need one 89 to farm the event. If you're worried about the welfare epics that they're dropping, I agree they're nice to have, but there are plenty of other ways to get geared, and if you're not 89 or 90 yet you don't really need to worry about raid gear yet anyway.
I noticed you said you didn't buy the MoP expac. I can understand that it sucks to miss part of the holdiays because you don't have all the expansions. But they also have to cater to the people who did buy it, and won't have any incentive to run the boss if they don't update the gear like they do every expac. They're weighing the interests of everyone who did pay for the expac with the people who haven't yet, and they know that the holiday bosses are an incentive to buy it. I think that they try to make a fair amount of holiday content accessible for players of all levels, but also reserve some rewards for the current max level to give players who have been playing for 6-7 years, and have the rewards from the year before, an incentive to keep participating.

Ah- I misunderstood. I thought by "I did not buy it just to power level my main two toons" he meant he didn't buy it, because he had no interest in doing that. Grammatically it could go either way, but I can see how he could have meant that he didn't buy it for that sole purpose, but did buy it.
In that case, it still sucks to miss the holiday events because you didn't level as quickly as would have been required, but I don't think that being 89 at this point would be considered "Power Leveling" if you bought the expac when it came out. But again, they have to balance the event between the people who do want to have some relevant end-game reason to participate, and people who have not leveled, and I think they do that fairly well.

I would also have to agree for this particular event. Brewfest is where I would probably put my grievances if anything.

Agreed with others: I'd like to take part in the holiday bosses this year, but given my propensity to slack, level other alts, or just not play as often as I can/would like, I'm content knowing that there'll be at least another round or two of these particular holidays before the next expansion is released.
Do what you need to do to enjoy the game. Don't stress; you can always make an alt to enjoy the slow, leisurely questing/dungeon running experience.

It'd be nice if holiday rewards weren't restricted to those at max level. I'd love for the Headless Horseman loot to be scaled down so any level can run the dungeon and receive a nice treat!

The holiday can be enjoyed by players from 1-90. Visit any and every inn in each continent, and you can get treats. The event is not supposed to be about the boss encounter only.
This, many times this: It's a fun event, just have fun and remember the purples will always be there.

Usually when these two holidays hit the current x-pac has been out for either 10 or 22 months. That means the drops are pretty much useless for raiding. But not this time. Maybe that's the root of the complaint. The other possibility is that if you have tons of alts it would be impossible to get very many of them to 90 in time to do the boss quests for these two events. Of course YMMV.

It really is hypocritical of Blizzard to not delay or extend this holiday event as well and instead *gasp* adhere to the date of the real holiday it is based on.
Or maybe it is hypocritical that they released Mists just before two large events with holiday bosses?
Your choice.
