Months ago, I started leveling Archaeology, and at the time, you stopped skilling up from digging after 50. I have picked it up on my shaman now, and I am at 310 and am still getting skilliups from digging. I was just curious as to when this changed, and how long it lasts, so that I can OCD my way to 600 :) IE, holding off on a solve when I am close to training up so that I don't waste skillups doing a solve.

I'm afraid I don't have any conclusive answer for you, but my best guess is that is was changed with MoP, I can't recall seeing it mentioned in any post though, but it might've slipped by.
Regarding when digs stop giving skillups, I don't know, but just continue digging and you'll eventually notice that they'll stop giving skillups (or not, if you're lucky!) at which time you can start solving items.
Sorry that I can't give you any clear answers, if I come across anything I'll be sure to let you know.

This is not a bug. It was a change in a recent hotfix:
General
Digging up a find while practicing Archaeology will now continue to grant skill points past 50.

I just topped off archy doing digs (I was sitting somewhere in the 570's). Digging will continue to grant skill-ups now all the way to 600.
This is absolutely true. I recently came back to the game after taking Cata. off (so had never done any Arch. before) and leveled my Archaeology from 0 - 600 in a little under a day by just digging in Eastern Kingdoms, and building Dwarf, Troll and Fossil artifacts when available.
