Yea, I've spent about 9 in a row now with only gold. It's just an extra chance... RNG is indeed RNG.
Try to look at it this way... it's an extra chance you never had before and they could easily remove in the future. It's honestly no different than not getting a piece suited for you two (or more) weeks in a row.

I would say that 80% of the time I only get gold from using the extra roll. However, at least for now, I think the best use of a coin is if an item has already dropped. Not just any item, however, as some are unique equip. What I am talking about is tier pieces or weapons. If you get lucky and get your tier legs to drop, for example, if you use your roll, you get a second set of legs. That way you can gear both your main set and offset and have them both up to date. Recently I used my extra loot roll after a weapon dropped and I got to upgrade both of my axes. I actually figured this out by accident when I got loot and I tried to roll again to see if I could get a mount to drop off the Sha.

I've gotten loot twice using these so far; once from Sha and once from LFR.

I wonder if wowhead data has any way to determine the chance to win gear. I am guessing it is somewhere around 15%.... which makes it not unlikely that you can go 7 times without winning anything.
I have had incredible luck with these things on Sha. (two tier pieces) and I also won my sha-touched weapon with one. but rng is rng. Even if I didnĀ“t win ever with them, they are still a cool addition to the game because you basically get them for free and it gives you a little though-process when deciding when to use them.

Most of my LFR loots won are from normal rolls instead of charms, not much luck on extra rolls.
