Auctioneer addon question

Hello,
When using auctioneer I can't seem to get it to undercut the competition correctly. I've had about a week's worth of scans and when I use the appraiser to post items up for auction it seems to often suggest odd prices. I would like to undercut the competition and be the cheapest in the list but it often returns inexplicable results and I can't work out why.
For example, looking at the list of other sellers for an item it may be that 15g is the cheapest on the list, but my price is suggested as three or four times that, so I have to manually enter a buyout price to undercut the competition. Sometimes the suggested price seems to be undercutting as expected, other times it is not. I have it set to market price and also to undercut by 5% but I'm still gettting odd prices in appraiser.
Any idea where I'm going wrong?

The Appraiser function actually prices items by what they're selling for, rather than undercutting the competition. "Market price" means the average of what it sees stuff sell for, and it will undercut
that
by 5%.
Always undercutting can mean losing money. With gear, excepting end-game gear, you might as well undercut whatever's there, because there's not a high demand (unless someone priced it insanely low).
Commodities (herbs, cloth, etc.) & cut end-game gems sell at a steady pace, so undercutting only serves to drag prices down. Especially if someone posted stuff at less than half what it
will
sell for. Going low on these should be reserved for when you just want to get rid of something. Don't worry about the fact that some of them are priced lower than yours; with steady demand, the cheap stuff will go quick and folks will have little choice but to pay fair market price for your stuff.
If you want to
make
Auctioneer undercut the competition, go to the "Post" tab. Make sure "Undercut Competition" is checked, then drag the item from your bag to Auctioneer's item slot on the page. It will automatically price the item(s) to undercut everything currently selling (it does NOT take sales history into account at all). Be sure to adjust your quantity
and
stack size to match how you want to sell stuff (a stack of 20 +Strength gems probably won't sell at all).

I haven't used auctioneer for a while- I switched to auctionator- but if I remember correctly, they let you toggle between listing items for whatever you listed them for last and listing them to undercut what's on the market now. There might also be something in the settings, which is setting prices at a "market value"- an average price based on all the data it's collected so far. So it might be that right now the items are listed at way below normal market value, and the add-on is listing above them because of that. If you go in and look at your settings, it should allow you to adjust how it determines default pricing.

Ah, that makes more sense now. So I guess I should continue to post at the price recommended. Thank you both for your help.

While we are here, I have another question please; to build up a backlog of scans, do I need to do them all with the same character? For example I have a bank alt that sits outside a mailbox in Ironforge. If he does a scan does it contribute to the scans that my main has been doing in Stormwind or do I need to keep scanning with my main? Cheers.

No, the scan data is stored globally, not per-character.
However, a far better (and faster and more reliable) option than Auctioneer's in-game scan is to regularly download and use data from
The Undermine Journal
or
WoWuction
. These sites scan the Auction House constantly (using Blizzard's web APIs) and will give you infinitely better statistics than doing the scans yourself.
There is an addon for
either
site
to hook the downloaded data into Auctioneer.

It's definitely a good idea to supplement your scans with The Undermine Journal's data, but remember it needs to be updated manually. The addon cannot grab the data on its own. If you depend on it, you will need to update it almost constantly. It does provide an excellent source of historical data and trends, but you should still scan as regularly as possible if your goal is to build up an excellent database. Auctioneer's ability to gather its own data at any time means it will build up a database just as accurate as TUJ over time granted scans are performed often enough, with the upside being that it doesn't require you to constantly download the data by hand.
Generally I make a habit of scanning the AH every time I visit it.

I wrote a short Python script that downloads and unzips the Undermine data, then hooked it up as a scheduled task that runs hourly during my prime WoW play time.
There's a thread or two on doing this on the TUJ forums.

That's such a better solution than bothering with TSM if all you want is the data :/
