What is the worst that can happen if my account has been hacked, and I can't recover it for a week?

The majority of the damage happens within hours of losing your account.
Already, all your gold has been transferred, all your gear has been sold, and your bank has been emptied.
Some thieves stop here. But you could also now be being used as a farm-bot, or a spam-bot.
The good news here is, even though the process is a little tedious, Blizz will get you most of your stuff restored. Just give it time, and follow the procedure.
The bad news is, you now need to find the hole they came in through. Otherwise, you will just be nailed again. And...you have to be concerned with all other personal information on your machine. If they got your WoW info, they also could have your bank info, and identity.
You can try running MalwareBytes, and anti-viral programs, but personally, I would pay for professional data backup, and wipe the machine and start fresh.

If you're on the road, you're probably logging in from different locations often.. Blizzard tracks the location of the IP address you log in from, and if it's out of the ordinary, they'll lock your account. Something to that affect could be the real issue; not necessarily hacking.

I have to go to the battle.net forums and search for it each time. It is like the 7th or 8th thread down where someone has copypasta'd it like i just did.

I was hacked once, but it was caught quickly. Blizzard got all my gear back that my characters were wearing. They did not touch my bank though. Sounds like they must have been using one of my characters as some sort of farm bot, because when I got control of my account again, before they started to get my gear back, I had 1000's more gold than I had prior to getting hacked. Nice gift for my troubles.
A side note, started using the authenticator (

), and have had no problems since. I highly recommend getting one. Best $6.50 I ever spent.
