Both of my realms say that they're up, but I can't log on.
I assume this is because the realm maintenance is still going on?

Realm maintenance is supposed to still go on for another 1hr 53 mins. Patience, young apprentice. Slow down. Life is to be savored.
Cheers.

Eh, I was just surprised to see that they were listed as up, so I went ahead and tried to log on.
I'm in the school library right now, I have work that needs to be done =P

Hi XCrunr,
One thing that I'm not sure is always made clear is that the
realm status page
is showing the internal status of the realms. You have to take the information with a grain of salt in that, what is shown there (although usually a good representation) of what you can expect, may not always exactly translate to what you find available. When a realm is listed as up for us (on maintenance day), but not for you - that usually means it's in the final checks before we go live with it. Shouldn't be much longer. Thanks for your patience!

I just would love to know why they are always down for maintenance, past few days they have been down twice for that long. What do they do that takes 6 hours to accomplish. Just # sudo reboot and everything will be fine. Remember rebooting is always the fix :)
And you can tell when the non IT people speak up. You do realize that swapping hardware, running diagnostics, repairing any issues found and then making sure everything is running back at peak operating condition takes a bit of time...
And if you think that a single linux command can fix everything, you need to stay off 4chan and reddit.

It was a joke, hence the smiley at the end. I'm a network administrator in RL, so thank you Mr. He's not I.T.
I just was pointing out, it would be nice to know what is being repaired, that ALL servers go down. Is it just to upgrade/replace hardware, or is there problems in the cache and game play mechanics not running right. This is why i try to avoid forums with gamers on them, some actually have knowledge in computers, and others have no sense of humor, or at least cannot detect it.
As a network admin, do you tell your end user exactly what the problem is or do you just say "network issue", "hardware issue", or the ever popular "Must be a Gremlin"? I have been in the IT field for almost 16 years and have found it far easier to tell the end user the generic issue than to go into details and watch them get the "amazed and confused" look on their faces. At least they tell us when it will be down for "maintenance" and not that they are just taking it down for 6 hours as a member of the IT world, you should know that is the best way they can answer without confusing 99% of the people and causing a ton of fussing and whining.

I bought stock in Blizzard for a couple of years then ended up selling it. I think I ended up losing about $4. It seems most publicly traded gaming companies have very small up/down waves, not a lot of money moving around there.

Hello IT. Have you tried turning it off and on again?

I also heard taking a nap while the realms are down will help them come back up.

I agree that there are users who need to know more than others. And I use an example similar to yours for most users when we do have downtime, but as I work for a small company (>150 end users) after I explained it the first time, they pretty much understood we only take the servers down during the work week for extreme cases. Besides that, we always do our maintenance on Sundays when no one is in the office. (Blizzard's Tuesday as I am assuming they figured this is when the "Least number of players will be effected").
But I agree, the "Did you reboot it yet?" does come out more often than not as I think that is the stock answer from IT besides "No." No hard feelings on my part and sorry if it came across that way....I have just seen so many people lately thinking reboot solves every issue known to man and thinking they know IT that it crawls under my skin quicker than most.
Side story....had a user at work tell me yesterday that he wanted a full size tower because the slim lines weren't as powerful because they weren't as big.......he learned that from his class at ITT Tech...
