Let's say it's WoW's final expansion, and you're leveling to cap on your favorite toon, enjoying the new zones and quests. You make it to the last zone and manage to survive. Ding. Think about it, you know it's the last expansion. Your favorite toon is never going to level again. You can't ever level any of your professions again. Once you learn all the recipes, that's it. No more.
How do you feel about that?

Well thankfully that isn't happening anytime soon. ;)
Plus, when (and if) they do decide not to continue updating the game I imagine they'll incorporate something to satisfy those who still play it.

Well, I enjoy the leveling process, and when my toon hits level cap it's usually 'cool, time to get to the meat of the expansion'. The first time you hit level cap you get a little giddy, but after that, it's just another day in the game.

Umm happens with every expansion - play the endgame.
Cheers.

You're kind of avoiding the topic there, sas. It's just a hypothetical situation.
I suppose so.
In that case, I don't think I'd feel anything one way or another. I'd just continue playing the endgame, maybe make new characters and assuming that Blizzard is still releasing new content (without level increases) I think I'd be fine. If they aren't doing that, I'd probably just retire from the game altogether.

That's what it felt like to reach 60. It was awesome, the game didn't end there but it changed in a way that, for me, was better. I'm pretty sure that I still felt like that at 70 and didn't expect there to be another expansion around the corner (though perhaps it was widely known by others, just not me).
I say: play the game you have not the game that may or may not be coming in the future.

I firmly believe I will be dead before WOW shuts down.
UO peaked in population at about 300k players 7 years ago, and it is still around and being developed, it isn´t even on life support. WOW has about 5M ´real´ subscribers it will take a staggering long time before that widdles down to where it there aren´t enough players for a development team..and then even longer after that to where it isn´t profitable to even keep the servers up.
Once a game makes it this long, there are just too many players who will never unsubscribe.
So to answer your question.. roll over in my grave.

This isn't even an issue for me. When my main hits 60, I'm going to pay 10 gold to exp-lock him; then level his Blacksmithing to 300, take him down to the anvil in Blackrock Depths, deck him out in full Dark Iron armor + Blackguard + Jagged Obsidian Shield + Heavy Obsidian Belt; and finally level his fishing + cooking + first aid to 300.
I will then spend all of my time RPing and talking about the "good old days" when the Horde didn't have any "pretty" races.

I'd say it's time for a new game at that point. I can't imagine Blizzard not releasing another fantasy MMO game, since it's so well-known for the genre of fantasy and SF. But the enormous playerbase that enjoyed the style and genre of WoW likely would not enjoy an SF MMO as much, because it's not what they're used to and because the fantasy genre has been kind of exploding over the last decade. That in mind, they still have millions of subs, more than most (or any?) other MMO out there right now, and own the king of the fantasy MMO domain. They have the time and resources to plan out the roots of a new one--perhaps something different altogether--and I'm certain that it will be tighter at release than the virtually story-arc-less and goalless vanilla WoW. Assuming they've noted things they would like to do better if they had the chance to start all over again, which seems logical.
But how would I feel about it? It would be kind of depressing. All of those achievements that future gamers will never see, all of those experiences that a new generation won't understand. Memes will fade like Egyptian hieroglyphics.
I'm hoping that whatever money machine replacement they make for WoW will enable us to link something of this game to it, even if it's an entirely different game. A list of achievements, of max level characters, or something like that. Maybe some titles--one for having played WoW at all and others for getting specifically tricky achievements.
Just some ideas :D
