james you are such a pussy. all your little munchkins that follow you are maggots too. good luck to your guild cause it probably sucks. go ahead and be a cry baby to the post master only %^&s cry and complain. *!@# off.
AHAHAAHAHAAA
Can't even come up with an actual argument. Just resorts to name calling and personal attacks. I at least gave some very detailed reasons why you are a blight to these forums and a disgrace to mankind as a whole. You, you just bitch and moan like a 2 year old who just got his blankie taken away.
Why isn't there a "report" button on these forums?

These forums are a place to discuss not a place to have fights. Please take personal beef and banter elsewhere. I'm no admin but the bickering has to stop. I didn't start this thread so we could put down others.

Hey, it's not like you started this thread in the best of lights, nor is this a new discussion or something that hasn't been beaten to death a hundred times before.
Besides, it's always fun to rile up people like jixer, just to see how far they'll go.
Heck, I might put together a sig in jixer's honor, so I can remember the entertainment he's providing me.

I had hoped that I was clear in the original post that it was not intended to bash a spec or to cause fights to break out, but to speak on behalf of the frost spec and how useful it is, regardless of what others may say about it. You might say that the topic is "beaten to death" but I still see frost mages converting to fire because they automatically think it's the promised land of more damage, while in reality, it isn't always the case. It's also partially targeted toward all of those fire mages who post on any frost-related forum that Fire>Frost and that you should respec if you're frost. It's a silly notion and while the topic may be exhausted to you, it may not be exhausted to other readers. As a frost mage, I find it refreshing (haha) to see someone at any time in any forum sticking up for the Frost spec in raiding. This is, of course, just my opinion, but that's what this is all about isn't it?
Regarding your quarrel with Jixer, verbally duking it out with one another is fine, but it's common courtesy to keep your argument out of public places. It's like hanging your laundry out to dry on the front lawn instead of the backyard. Sure it can be done, but we don't need to see it. In the end, all you do is embarrass your selves in front of everybody.
GL with the new sig.

You know, I always wonder how true this is. Now I don't declare to know the population of the mages in my server, but for the most part, the mages I've come across and inspected all turned out to be Frost.
It's very rare for me to see an actual fire specced mage running around.
This could just be a coincidence, or this thing about "most mages are fire" thing is really overrated.
In my opinion, instead of frost mages being under-represented, I think they're the overwhelming majority of mages out there. They're probably mostly true casuals and hence, don't really post that much. Hence the illusion of under-representation in the forums.
Something to think about. :)

Well, given that Frost is the PvP spec, and Fire is the PvE spec, it does make sense that most Mages will be PvP Frost spec'd, as by the numbers many more mages will be PvPing at any given time than raiding.

Really?
'cuz they are
everywhere

Wonderful!
Now back on topic...
Fire mages do make up the great majority of mages in raiding guilds, and since this post was originally intended to be spoken toward PVE Raiding I think it's true enough, no?
If you need any sort of "proof of this" why not look through all the forums of people asking "What spec should I be for End game Raiding?!" and the answer is always invariably Fire fire fire. All I've been saying is that I'd like people to try green eggs and ham before they put it down without even seeing their potential, or more importantly, how much FUN frost can be to play!!!
Why is it fun? Water elemental and self-stacking Winter's Chill. Aww YEAH. Why is fire NOT fun? Manual Stacking of Scorches and AMG 6 seconds of pyro casting = you're off getting a drink anyway. ;-) Alright, so that's really just all opinion, but I'd like to see mages try their Green Eggs and Ham!

I'd like to see a WWS with a frost mage on Brutallus.

Wow damn nice explanation!
Now can you explain to me how I'm still doing more damage than most equivalently geared fire mages? I believe the answer lies in character usage and how close the player sticks to the ideal plan for maximum damage. While Fire does gain more mathematically from their spell damage on paper, not all of them can reinforce their mathematics with button mashing in the right order apparently. ;-)
As well, I can tell you that I do not just throw frost bolts during my raid fights, but your math is quite convincing. But since I love playing frost for a hundred different reasons, I'll remain spec'ed frost. ;-)
In practice, we also have to take into account spell resistance and the fact that fire is not binary while Frost is. Assuming the player is hit capped, is the resisted damage equivalent over a 10 minute fight or does the partial resistance to multiple fire spells add up more quickly than a Frost mage's binary hit/miss?
Another disparity "in practice" is that just before we pop our water elemental, we also (if we're SMART) will pop trinkets and Icy Veins to gain even more maximum damage. Unless I'm mistaken, my water elemental gains damage from my popped trinket and I can further increase my damage with Icy veins gaining further benefit of my popped trinket. Over a few iterations, this combination can prove to increase my DPS by almost 300 during a raid fight given the proper conditions (aka I don't get interrupted or bounced in the midst of doing it). The scaling of these actions may be enough to offset some of the damage that fire mages gain mathematically.
Caribou, can you verify that my water elemental does gain damage when I pop my trinket? It does seem that it does, but it might just be all in my head. ;-)

It's anectdotal until I can find a better source, but quoted off the comments page for the Water Elemental spell:
Yes the water elemental's waterbolt scales with +dmg at a rate of 71.43% of his damage. The elemental receives 40% of your +dmg, meaning the waterbolt gets 28.57% of your total +dmg to frost.

Well I certainly don't have the math to back up the fact that I just like playing frost. :-)
Great posts though! You really know your stuff! /bow
